Show Two Men from Panama Canal Zone Visit News ' By MABEL J All VIS ; Special visitors at the News office recently were James Spendlove, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Spendlove Spend-love of Hurricane, and his brother-in-law, L. A. Godby. The two men returned this week from the Panama Canal Zone where both have been employed, Mr. Spendlove Spend-love for the past 18 months at Government construction work in the municipal engineering division, where for several months he has been principal foreman. Living for 18 months where the rainfall is never below 85 inches and usually well over 100 inches, Mr. Spendlove's principal regret in coming home was that he could not transfer a few inches of that rainfall to the burning areas of southern Utah, especially Washington Wash-ington county, but there again he faced restrictions. He says he has enjoyed his work immensely and perhaps would not have come home at this time but felt he could do a little extra to help the war effort, so came to report to the local draft board. However, How-ever, he has his mind set on joining join-ing the Seabees ahead of his draft call ,if permitted. Stationed On East Coast Mr. Godby is stationed on the East Coast and came overland via New York, leaving Mrs. Godby and their two children in Panama because of the travel restrictions. He says, however, that they have a large number of Utahns in that area both in military and civilian service and occasionally large groups get together for a Utah social. Mr. Spendlove came by plane from the West Coast of Panama to Los Angeles, stopping overnight at Mexico City enroute. This, he says, was a most thrilling air-voyage, air-voyage, which he would urge all who can to take when conditions permit. He wishes it were possible to give details of the trip. But in spite of the year-round verdure of Panama, with its one rainy and one dry windy season per year, he still likes the looI of the U. S. and Utah, and wants to get in now and do his bit towards to-wards making the world so people can travel safely by land, sea and air once more, and enjoy the old-time way of living without war worries. |
