Show Vocational Defense Courses Planned For Utah's Schools One hundred and ten classes have opened or will open in the near future in the Universities, Junior colleges and high school of the state to train men 18 years or older in shop courses in mechanics for the United States National defense. Dixie college will participate partici-pate in this program with courses being started immediately. A program for Utah has been submitted to the government which asks for $64,760 for the next two months. This money will come from the funds set up for this purpose by Congress which made an 'appropriation of $15,000,-000. $15,000,-000. This money will be allocated to the vocational boards of education edu-cation of the various states largely upon a basis of the facilities available. avail-able. An initial allotment of $25,000 has been given Utah with the admonition that the state start its program at once. Automobile Drivers and Serviceman. Ser-viceman. d. Gasoline Engine Mechanics. e. Automotive Electricians. Division 6. Aircraft Workers a. Aircraft Sheet Metal Workers. b. Aircraft Sheet Metal Riveters. Division 10. Draftsmen . b. Mechanical Draftsmen. c. Blueprint Men. d. ..Specification Writers. The type of training for which federal funds have been provided are as follows: A. "Supplementary courses for those persons who are employed in jobs essential to the national defense de-fense program, for the purpose of improving their skill and knowledge. know-ledge. B. Pre-employment refresher courses for workers selected from the public employment office registers, who by training will become be-come qualified for employment in jobs essential to the national defense de-fense program." Enrollees for the two types of programs may be selected as follows: fol-lows: A. For supplementary courses. "The enrollees in supplementary courses must be workers who are employed in jobs or closely related re-lated jobs that are essential to national defense. They should be enrolled upon the endorsement of employers". B. Pre-employment refresher courses. "All persons who are to enroll in these courses must be selected from the registers of public employment em-ployment agencies. The state and local school authorities are responsible re-sponsible for the selection of the enrollees from the group of persons per-sons submitted by the public employment em-ployment service. There must be reasonable assurance that upon completion of the training, the persons enrolled in these courses will be employable in jobs which are essential to national defense and for which training is being given. Only such persons shall be trained as are now, or immediately immediate-ly after training will be, of an employable age. The local WPA official may recommend workers whom h believes will be suited for training and who are register with the public employment ser vice to the local school official in charge of the program. From sue WPA workers the school officials will select those who can be made by training, employable in i0C essential to national defense. The W.P.A. has authority t0 substitute the training program for the work project and nav wages for the time spent in trafc ing. There will be no charge and tuition fees for this training. The equipment and supplies will furnished. There are no state Classes will be approved in even' county, or school district bound', ary lines in this training program vocational school in the state and boys interested should contact the local school authorities to determine deter-mine whether or not the local offering will suit their capibilities. If not then they can go to another school where such a course is given. An all time re-employment service will be set up in St. George for the convenience of people in Washington county. The office will be temporarily housed in the educational building at the Dixie junior college. Hours for classes will be arranged ar-ranged according to the needs of the enrollees. They can be given any time, day or night and at the Dixie junior college will be given as needs require from one to four hours in length daily for the next two months for which the program pro-gram has been approved. |
