Jacob L orkman opened school in the front room of Ira Bradshavv's home. Besides being Hurricane's first school teacher, Mr Work man was its first postmaster and first correspondent to the Wash ington County News. The young community grew rapidly and in the fall of 1907 had erected a Ward Hall Previously Pre-viously religious gatherings had been held in Ira Bradshaw's home in cold weather and under a bowery during the summer months. The group at this time was known as a branch of the Virgin Ward; later Samuel Isom became their first bishop. Charles Workman opened the first merchantile establishment and eleven years from the spring of 1906 David Hirschi of Rockville with others organized the first State Bank at Hurricane. Garden City Today Hurricane is the ideal garden-city, with a population of better than 1300. There are five stores carrying general merchandise, merchan-dise, a drug store, two cafes, a bank, a barber shop and a garage. School facilities are adequate to complete a high school education. And now on the eve of the completion com-pletion of the Hurricane-La Verkin bridge, that will connect Hurricane Hurri-cane with the tourist world the words of J. C. Workman, first "News" correspondent, are again fitting "Watch Us Grow." Credit Due Much credit for the success of the entire day is due Mrs. Amelia Heaton and her vice-captains, Mrs. Mary Smith and Mrs. Martha Hastings, say those who took part. |
