Navy Orders E4 New Airplanes Washington Five contracts for 54 new airplanes of Improved types and forty-eight air-cooled engines at a total to-tal cost of ll.647.47S were awarded by the navy department. The awards represent rep-resent the first to be made under Ibis fiscal year's appropriation for naval aeronautics and the machines will be of the latest models In flighting, training train-ing and observation designs. The Cur-tiss Cur-tiss Aeroplane and Motor company of Garden City. N. Y.. under a $:.n.l91 contract will build eighteen class "VF" (model F. 7 C-l) planes. These will be a special typo shipboard fighter equipped equip-ped wllh Pratt und Whitney 4UU horsepower horse-power air-cooled "Wasp" engines. To the Chance Vonght corporation. Long Island City. New York, went a contract con-tract for 20 model O 2 U l planes and spare parts at a cost of $347,050. They will be an Improved type of the present pres-ent 02 U two-seater Vought observation observa-tion machine.
