Show j WONDERFUL BASIN OF TWO THOUSAND LAKES j ! Canada has its Thousand Islands. ! but Utah has its Two Thousand lakes, to say nothing about the Great Salt lake, the largest inland body of salt water in America. But about these 2,000 lakes all of them fresh water, covered with ducks in season and filled with mountain trout at all times. The Basin of Two Thousand lakes is located in the heart of the Uinta mountains, about 80 miles northeast of Salt Lake City. These lakes are formed in groups of from 50 to 275. The largest group probably is what is known as the Granddaddy Lake basin, high up in the Uinta mountains, and covers an area of 25 miles east and west, and 15 miles north and south. From this group there are hundreds of lakes stretched on east toward the state line, making in all more than 2,000 lakes. Only about 10 per cent of these lakes are named. The bed of Granddaddy Lake basin is at an elevation of about 9,000 feet, and mountain peaks rise to 13,000 feet. Several of the peaks east of the basin have an elevation of 14,000 feet or more; King's peak, the highest, being 14,498 feet. Four of the largest rivers in this part of the country the Weber, Provo and the Duchesne have their headwaters head-waters on Bald mountain, which is located lo-cated near the center of the basin. Each of these rivers flows in a different differ-ent direction. Granddaddy lake, so named because of its size, is one mile and a half long and a quarter of a mUe wide. This entire en-tire country, except for the peaks, is covered with a heavy growth of pine 'timber, and, to those who love to fish, it is paradise. The west end of the basin is just CO miles from Salt Lake City. There are 37 lakes in this section which drain into the Provo river, and it is to this point that a new auto road has recently been built. It is an exceptionally good road e.nd three hours is ample time to remove re-move one from the heat of the city to this beautiful lake country. The country coun-try beyond the end of the road is reached by trails built and maintained by the United States forest service. A trip by pack train, or on foot, with the load being carried by burros, is something some-thing to look forward to. Of the Uinta mountain range it is said: "In many respects the Uinta mountain range in northeastern Utah is the most remarkable in the United States. Its peaks are the highest points in Utah King's peak having an elevation of 14,498 feet and it is the only high range in the nation running due east and west."
