Show Difiiculties in Problem of Safe Grade Crossings According to the (-,mr f uK, ltail. way Age, the problem of malclng the grade crossing safe presents far ,re dillloullles than the problems of s'e-guardlng s'e-guardlng the railroad emplovees and passengers on trains. Ue qwlos tires to show that during the first two months of this year the number of passengers killed Increased from 15 during the Corresponding two months Inst year, to lathis year. The number of employees killed decreased from 314 to 2(11, and the number of trespassers UiUed declined from 818 to 321. These good decreases are more than offset however, by the fact that the number of deatl.s at grade crossings Increased from 258 to 344, an increase of 33 per cent. The carelessness of the driver Is responsible for the great majority of crossing accidents. We are a careless nation in this respect, and heedless of the danger always present at a grad3 crossing, says the Indiana Farmers' Guide. The grim specter of death is lurking near all such places, but how many drivers ever think of him as they approach the tracks? Few drivers ever realize their responsibility in this matter. As a usual thing, not only their own lives, but the safety of others oth-ers is at stake. If every driver would only remember that possible annihilation annihila-tion awaits his party at each crossing and would drive his car accordingly, the number of crossing accidents would decrease. , |
