The largest peace time supply bill ever presented to 1 congress a measure carrying more than three-quarters of a bilion dol- 1 lars for treasury and postoffice department de-partment activities during the coming fiscal year was reported by the house appropriation committee. ' The total is $763,810,522 or $11,. 890,614 more than for the current year, but approximately $12,000,000 less than budget estimates. Of the combined total, $126,911,-107 $126,911,-107 would go to the treasury and $636,209,415 to the postoffice department. Included in the treasury item is $11,000,000 for enforcement of prohibition pro-hibition $783,120 more than recommended recom-mended by the budget, but $341,770 less than the total available this year. The bill carries $20,597,835 for the coast guard, which is being used to prevent liquor smuggling. Among the post office department items is $2,000,000 for the transcontinental air mail service $150,000 less than the amount granted for this year. Chairman Madden estimated permanent per-manent and indefinite appropriations for the treasury department which require re-quire no legislative action would aggregate ag-gregate $1,340,853,955. He expects a reduction from $865,000,000 to $830,000,000 next year in interest on the public debt. An automatic increase in-crease in the sinking fund was estimated esti-mated at $310,000,000 this year and $323,175,000 next year. The bill carries $16,656,200 for the customs service $322,940 less than appropriated last year; $417,600 for the federal farm loan bureau; $48,-021.S60 $48,-021.S60 for the internal revenue service, ser-vice, including thfe $11,000,000 for prohibition enforcement; $9,103,101 for the public health service and $1,-682,040 $1,-682,040 for mint and assay offices. No provision is made for maintenance mainten-ance after July 1 of the assay offices at Deadwood, S. D., and Salt Lake City. Elimination of these offices was recommended by the administration. administra-tion. "From the evidence obtained by the committee," said the report, "there is no decrease in work to be performed in the enforcement of the prohibition and narcotic act as to justify at the present time a decrease in the organization." The committee recommended that not to exceed $50,000 be expended "for the dissemination - of information informa-tion and appeal for law observance and law enforcement through the use of posts and other modes of public appeal." The appropriation for air mail service is $150,000 less than the amount available for. this year, but does not contemplate reduction of service. The bill carries $52.6,373 for mail transmission by pneumatic tubes the amount available this year and $89,250,000 for rural delivery services the latter a decrease of $600,000. |
