Show GOOD GREENS FOR MIDSUMMER AND FALL USE There are many valuable greens for home use from now until fall, says J. C. Hpgenson, extension agronomist Of the Utah State Agricultural College. Swiss chard is one of the few vegetables that continues to yield from late spring through the summer and fall until long after frost has killed most crops. Chard may be planted in early August and still yield . abundantly abundant-ly for Quite a long season. Beets pulled before the roots reach marketable size make excellent ex-cellent greens. They usually contain con-tain more iron than spinach. New Zealand spinach is a fine hot and dry weather crop. The seeds are hard to germinate and usually start poorly unless they are soaked three or four days in warm water before being planted. plant-ed. To harvest New Zealand spinach, the tops of each branch are broken oft about three or four inches. Within a week, the plant seeds two or three new branches where each was broken off, thus making the supply almost al-most endless. A very delicate salad plant, that is somewhat new but good, is Chinese cabbage. Get the variety "Chibili" and plant the seed in July or early in August. |
