Fooling the Bees An lnr!i-:t In Canada la trying the eiperlment of Hlilppliig his been to Anstralln In the full. The Idea Is to eliminate their lon winter rest and make them produce all the year round. Alter they have worked all Hummer In the North, and Just as they would bejln to Ihlnk of going to lilhernnte lnl: winter quarters, they are to find theniM-Jve In a new field of uctlvlty, where summer ha Junt hepun. So, iy ehijclng summer bruund the glohe, their owner expects to get double duty out of his hees. Then our modern rush Is to reach even the bees. Tbnt perfect model of Industry, that most efllclent and Indefatigable Inde-fatigable producer known to man Is to he made to work overtime! One wonders won-ders whether the apiarist from Canada Can-ada can get nway with It! Tn their display of Intelligence and rommon sense, In organization and constructive ability, the bees present an example that might well be emulated emulat-ed by humans. They have a well-or-franlzed society system, each of their three classes having a distinct purpose pur-pose In life from which they never for a moment depart. The queen lias her. flight and then nettles clown to constant Increase of the population. The males, or drones, play their part In the propagation of the species, after which they are systematically massacred by the workers. work-ers. These, with a dellberateness and a singleness of purpose which would do credit to any human, fulfill their purpose of preparing the comb, rearing rear-ing the young, and producing lioney, always producing, not merely what Is needed for sustenance, but a plentiful supply for the long winter season when there are no flowers to yield their nectar. A "rainy day" never finds the bees unprepared! When a hive has become too large for efllclent management, or when a second queen Is maturing, the bees do I not revolt or dispute or fight or con- ! test with each other for a place. They simply gather under their chosen leader lead-er and swarm colonizing a new hive, where business goes on "as usual." Tiees never "rush," never try to overdo. They are calm, deliberate, I sure of themselves. One cannot Imagine Im-agine a bee, for Instance, having the clock set nhend In order to get him out of bed on time, and insisting that In this way he could cheat himself of sleep and not be tired. That's a human hu-man stunt, not the bee's. And so one wonders whether the trick of moving the bees to follow summer will work, whether these very superior beings can be fooled Into burning the candle at both ends! I'm just impractical enough to hope they htrikc. What do you say? |
