Show r O A PROPHESY THAT WENT WRONG Back in 1798, Prof. Mialthus had the world on needles and pins when he "proved" that the population would increase in-crease faster than people would be able to grow food and in consequence starvation would be the lot of the world. Populations increase in gemetrical ratio, edibles in arithmetical ratio, he said. According to the Professor the only checks on the increasing population were war, famine, pestilence, misery and vice. At that he didn't forsee the motorist. This juggernaut of the highway killed over 30,000 and injured 800,000 more last year. No worse agency than carelessness at the wheel has been devised to keep the population within bounds. And yet we are now having to plow under foodstuffs food-stuffs in order to give the population a chance to catch up. Just another Prophet gone haywire. |
