Show Mid -Winter Race Meet InFullSwing The first day of the four day Mid-Winter Race meet being staged stag-ed in St. George on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. December 26, 27, 2S, and 29, got under way yesterday to the largest and most enthusiastic crowd to ever witness this annual an-nual event here in St. George. Six races were run with four entries' in each of the races with the exception of the second when only three were entered. Fans who saw the races on Wednesday Wednes-day state that they were the best ever run on the local track and with the race horse men learning the calibier of the various var-ious horses, they feel that the races should be even better on the succeeding days. Winners for the first day were: First race: three-eighths mile, Scooter, entered by L. D. Stewart Stew-art and ridden by H. Finn, took first place; Lone Man, entered by D. S. Burgess and ridden by Forrest Daniels, second place. Second Race: five-eighths mile, Yogano, entered by Alice Van and jidden by Speck Craig, first place; Dell Well, entered by Ivan Pollard and ridden by F. Daniels, second place. Third race: one-quarter mile, Peace Times, entered by Alice, Van, ridden by (S. Craig, first place; Parolett, entered by J. A. Judd and ridden by C. Swapp, second place. Fourth race: three-eighths mile, Peace Times, entered by Alice Van and ridden by S. Fifth race: free for all, once around the track, Chess, entered by D. Farnsworth and ridden by Dick Thompson, first place; Yogano, entered by Alice Van and ridden by S. Craig, second place. Thursday's races were lined up with three entries in each race with the exception of the fifth race which had ifour entered. There were to be six races instead in-stead of five as were run on Wednesday. ' - Fans who saw the races on the first day were highly enthusiastic. en-thusiastic. They are of the opinion opin-ion that this is without doubt the finest racing program that has ever been offered to local people. With the largest crowd to ever see a local race meet coming on the first day of the races which is not usually the best day, all indications are that the crowds will materially increase in-crease with each day of the meet. Saturday, the last day of the meet, should see many more out to the track. Keeping this in mind the race committee is endeavoring to line up the best races .possible for the rest of the days. Ideal "Dixie" weather prevailed prevail-ed yesterday to help make it a perfect racing day. Combine the good weather, fast horses, the good track, coupled with the large and enthusiastic crowd and you have what all racing enthusiasts enthus-iasts desire. Hard times have their bright side.
