Show PLNE-CONE JOHNNY Some years ago "Johnny Appleseed" took it upon him-nelf him-nelf to travel over Ohio and Indiana and plant appleseeds. His name and hobby have all but been fabled. But a8 the Los Angeles Times points out, a new model of Johnny Appleseed has been invented. He is duplicated dup-licated by some 300,000 in the forest camps that are scattered scatter-ed among the various states of the Union. They used to poke fun at Johnny Appieseed, but many who laughed lived to eat his apples. And many who scout the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps will live to enjoy its fruits. Our vast stretches of primeval forests make the work of these peace soldiers tremendously worth while. They are fighting insect life that threatens the very existence of our pines. They construct firebreaks that segregate whole sections from cigarette fiends . and thunderbolts. They replant wide areas denuded by fires and loggers. Park improvements, trails, ranger roads to hitherto hith-erto impenetrable pockets, camp sites all feel their energy. en-ergy. The workers save their self-respect as well as the forests. |
