Show AAA WITHDRAWS I'LAX FOR DAIRY CONTROL FOLLOWING STUDY Farmers of Utah will not be given an opportunity, for the present, to share in the $870,-000 $870,-000 in benefit payments, estimated estima-ted to be Utah's share of the proposed $165,000,000 dollar dairy production control program of the AAA. This announcement was made by Director William Peterson, manager of the administration for Utah, following a telegram from officials at Washington, D. C. The decision came after a close study of the reports from 15 regional conferences recently held by dairy officials of the AAA. In the light of testimony at the regional conferences the position pos-ition of the agricultural adjustment adjust-ment administration can be defined de-fined on the following points: 1. The scope of assistance available to the dairy industry, at least for the present, is narrowed nar-rowed to include only reduction in nuumber of diseased cattle and some dairy purchases for relief purposes. The administration adminis-tration will undertake both these meaurses with such funds as are made available by congress. Disease Dis-ease eradication is regarded' by the administration as an impor-1 tant social welfare and efficiency j measure which, however, is of j comparatively minor effectiveness effective-ness in production control. 2. Any adjustment program to be undertaken by the administration administra-tion must be for the dairy industry in-dustry as a whole, must be voluntary, vol-untary, and must not discriminate discrim-inate between groups of producers. produ-cers. 3. Under the law. processing taxes can not be levied unless and untii a decision is made to pay benefit payments -o individual indivi-dual farmers to compensat-2 them for cooperation in production control, as provided in ill :; agricultural adjustmen: ; grams. 4. Experience has sho1!; large scale stabilizationaLd;: fixing operations wnea -taken for tempory ten: wtthout support by si?;, control over production ally result in incerising e tion and end up in a k;s prices. Hence, such large ( stabilization operations e ; included in the adminler will be primarily for relief -and will be confined to t- quirenients. |
