Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablett Come Friday night, that is tonight, to-night, all of Utah or at least all of those in the TV area will be glued to their sets, because at 7 p.m. mountain time Gene Fullmer, Utah's pride will be taking on France's Charley Hu-mez, Hu-mez, the winner to get a shot at the title. Gene and Marv Jenson both say they were made that promise, tout in my book unless they can convince Sugar Ray Robinson Ro-binson that they can draw more money than Carmen Basillio they will have to wait. Of course Gene will have to beat Humez and that my friends is no small task. It is true in comparison Humez lost to Tiger Jones and Gene beat the Tiger. If you saw the fight you know how close that one was for the Frenchman. I thought at the end of the fight Humez was beginning to find the range, and at the end of the Jones fight Gene looked like he might be tiring so I look for this one to be real close. Good news for the intermoun-tain intermoun-tain fans when they talk of a title shot to be held in Utah but when they talk of staging it in the university stadium I begin to wonder because I don't think they have a chance. Come to think of it I can't think of one big fight that has been held in a school stadium. The only other oth-er two places are Ogden and West Jordan and neither one of those are anything to write home about. So don't look for a championship champ-ionship this summer. I still say it would draw real big. Our high school baseball team lost the state championship to Hurricane 6 to 3. The boys just messed up too many fly balls, and that is part of the game. The boys and their coach did a fine job all around and when year after year our teams are either the champions or the team to beat that is a credit to all concerned. con-cerned. So to Coach Schick and his boys, I say well done, and to the champions from Hurricane Hurri-cane congratulations. The newly formed State League Lea-gue opens its season this coming Sunday. With the array of talent tal-ent that has been gathered- for the teams I am sure we are in for an interesting season. The bowling alleys at the club have been reconditioned and they will open Monday. We are having a mixed doubles tournament tourna-ment on Tuesday night, starting at 7 o'clock. It will be handicap with a $2.00 entry fee per team. So get your entries in early and come out and have an evening of fun. Al |
