Show SURPLUS DEER KILLING AUTHORIZED ON" KAIBAB Ogden, Aug. 15. Following an agreement between the State of Arizona Ariz-ona and the United States Forest Service, District Forester R. H. Ruthledge announces that sportsmea will be allowed to cooperate in the killing of a limited number of deer on the Kaibab National Game Preserve Pre-serve this fall between October 1 and November 30 inclusive. This shooting shoot-ing will be under strict government supervision and is authorized only for the protection of the deer herd itself it-self from heavy losses, from starvation starva-tion and epidemic diseases that follow fol-low too great increase s on limited range, and for the protection of the range itself which has been badly overgrazed by excessive number of deer. Mr. Rutledge states that the number num-ber of deer in the preserve has been variously estimated from 20,000 to 50,000 with a fwan crop of between 5,000 and S.000. The killing will be directed from designated camps on the east and west sides of the Forest and so located as not to interfere with the drifting of the deer on the top of the plateau or within several miles of the main highway. No one person will be premitted to kill in excess ex-cess of three animals and a charge of $5 per animal will be made. The necessary authority to kill can be secured se-cured at the camps which may be reached through Fredonia or Kanab from the north or across Lee's Ferry from the south. In order to avoid accidents only a limited number of persons will be permitted on the areas each day. Those persons who desire to kill deer should make application ap-plication for a specific date. Blank application may be secured from the Forest Supervisor, Kanab, Utah, or the District Forester, Ogden, Utah. |
