The Uintah Utes didn't compete in the state tournament, but they can beam with pride as they gave the top two teams in the 3-A division of the state of Utah, Provo and Mountain View, some wild and close battles during the Region 7 season. Provo defeated Mountain View, 38 to 31, for the 3-A State Tournament title, Saturday. The Bulldogs owned a 28 to 27 lead at the start of the fourth quarter and their leading scorer, Duane Johnson, fouled out with 6: 16 to go and it was time to go into the stall. Mountain View's 7'2" center Carl Pollard, hit 19 of his team's 31 points and was the dominant player in the game. The Bulldogs appeared to be in trouble, but they went into a keep-away game with a 30-29 lead. Finally with 2: 53 to play in the game, Provo's Kevin Santiago San-tiago took a shot from deep in the corner and it hit nothing but net. The Bruins had a chance to get back into the ball game, but Scott Jolley missed miss-ed a long shot and Pollard missed four straight from short range. At one point in the game Pollard scored eight straight points to give his team the lead early in the game. Provo was led in scoring by Houtz with 12 points. Santiago scored nine points and Johnson put in eight counters. Frampton added five points. Robinson and Clark scored two points. Pollard was named to the Parade Magazine's second team. Also scoring for Mountain View were: Anderson, 6; Peterson, 2; Rasmussen, 2 and Jolley, 2. The Bruins popped in 12 field goals and hit 7 out of 12 free throws. Provo jumped out to a 9 to 4 lead in the first quarter and the game was tied 17-17 after two quarters. The Bulldogs owned a one point lead of 28-27 at the end of the third quarter and won the game by the score of 38 to 31. Mountain View placed second in the state tournament, but the Uintah Utes massacred the Bruins in Vernal, Feb, 16 by the score of 69 to 64. The Utes grabbed grabb-ed an 11 to 2 lead early in the first quarter and shot at the buzzer by Cary Hamilton presented a 21 point lead of 36 to 15 to the Uintah Utes at the end of the second quarter. A three-point play by Jeff Drollinger presented a lead of 11 points to the Uintah Uin-tah Utes late in the third quarter. Uintah Uin-tah had 46-37 lead after three quarters. Mountain View cut Uintah's lead to four points midway in the fourth quarter, but the Utes grabbed an eight point advantage advan-tage on a field goal by Drollinger and two free throws by Doug Bowen. The Utes went onto win the game by five points. Drollinger scored 24 points in the game and Pollard scored 20 points. Pollard was held to four points in the first half by the super Ute defense. Brian McNamara scored 12 points and Kevin Montague added 11 counters. Mark Wilkinson scored eight points and Hamilton added seven counters. Bowen put in five points and Mike Weldon scored two. The Utes owned a 24-21 lead going into in-to the third quarter in the first game with Mountain View on Jan. 19, but three slams by 7'2" Pollard enabled the Bruins to pull away for the victory in the fourth quarter. Uintah was only behind by four points in the game with Provo at Uintah on Feb. 22 after three quarters of action, but the Bulldogs went on to win the game by 14 points. Uintah owned leads in the first and third quarters and also had a small lead in the fourth quarter, but Provo won the first meeting with the Utes in Utah County in two overtimes, Jan. 26. |
