Show Houseman directs 'Lear' In "Stages: Houseman Directs Lear," filmmaker Amar-Pope Amar-Pope has created both a portrait of John Houseman ti documentary of the sometimes-tedious theatrical rev process. The one-hour show, airing on PBS, Wednesday jr marks the first time an American director of Houseman's r-ure r-ure and the actors' craft union, SAG, have allowed unrej.! ed filming of rehearsals. Introduced by Jason Robards, the film is neither a journal of the production nor a backstage glimpse. "It's a film about the passion and love that craftsmen for their work," says Pope, "It's about learning and gro-' and risking yourself. It's also about the importance ol -: Houseman's experience, values and excellence havino-. generosity to share themselves with the next general artists." Though perhaps best known for his Academy Awaij., ning performance as Professor Kingsfield in "The P-Chase." P-Chase." Houseman has also been known throughout cal circles for decades as a leader in the development training of American actors. He founded the Theater Cenj the Julliard School. After seeing the talent of the first gracing grac-ing class in 1972, he formed the Acting Company to le-them le-them performing together.
