Girls State held in Cedar City Utah Girls State will be held June 5-12 at Southern Utah State College, the 13th consecutive year that the American Legion Auxiliary-sponsored event has been held in Cedar City. The elected officials are Stacy B. Winawer, Salt Lake City, governor; Susan Forsythe, St. George, lieutenant governor; and Shellier Martin, Mar-tin, Sunset, and Sharlene Wells, Salt Lake City, Girls Nation Senators. "During the week they are on campus, cam-pus, Girls State participants gain practical prac-tical experience organizing party conventions con-ventions and enacting legislation," said Daphne Dalley, SUSC Coordinator of Conferences and Workshops. "SUSC has hosted Utah Girls State now for 13 years and we're very pleased to have the girls on campus once again," Mrs. Dalley said. "Since it is held here between commencement and the beginning of summer school, we're able to devote the" entire campus to Girls State needs." The public is invited to visit the SUSC campus for general "City Day," "County "Coun-ty Day," and "State Day," sessions. "These general assemblies should be of particular interest to everyone interested in-terested in the responsibilities and in- teractions of each level of state govern- ment," Mrs. Dalley said. Cedar City Mayor Robert Linford and otner city omciais will be on hand to discuss "Essential Facts of City . Organization and Operation" June 7 at 9:15 a.m. in the SUSC auditorium. On June 8, "County Day," Iron County Coun-ty officials will discuss the workings of their level of government in an early morning assembly scheduled to begin . at 9:15 a.m., also in the college auditorium. Then, on June 9, "State , Day," several state officials will visit SUSC to discuss the essentials of state government. The "State Day" assembly begins at 1:30 in the auditorium. Highlights of the week-long activity are general elections for Girls State and Girls Nation officers, a mock trial of "Legislative and Judicial Day," mini-musicals mini-musicals and a talent show and the highly emotional graduation ceremonies that mark the end of the educational experience. |
