Show White River pledges $4 million to highway The White River Shale Oil Corporation agreed to pay up to $4 million for the construction of a highway from Bonanza to Federal Prototype Oil Shale Lease Tract Ua and Ub where they propose an oil shale development. In an agreement signed Monday, April 26, White River agreed to pay Uintah County to build the five miles of improved highway. Additional funding for the project, which will include a bridge over the White River, has been authorized by the Board of Water Resources. The Board will review the project for commital funds at their May 7 meeting. "The local, state and industry cooperation demonstrated by this project is essential for the development of these oil shale resources," said Robert N. Pratt, president of White River Shale Oil Corporation. The new highway will provide access for personnel and heavy equipment from the Vernal area. A 2.5 mile highway currently being built by White River will connect the new county road with the company's plant and mine site. The White River Shale Oil Corporation was formed by Phillips Petroleum Company, Sunoco Energy Development Company and Sohio Shale Oil Company to plan and implement development activities on approximately 50 miles southeast of Vernal. They include 10,240 acres and are estimated to have recoverable reserves of over 700 million barrels of oil. |
