' ' - JONI REYNOLDS, student Students rated 6th in mock court contest A team of student lawyers from Uintah Uin-tah High School finished 6th in the preliminary round of the 3rd annual Mock Court Competition. The lawyers, Robert Beaslin, Jacky Hardy, Kevin Rhodes and Gordon Clark, earned 248 points in their two semi-final rounds against Hillcrest and Mountain View. The top team in the state had 259 points, The students are competing as part of their law class at the school. Thirty other high school also participated in the contest. "We were competing against the big school along the Wasatch front," said advisor JoAnn Gilbert, "And I think our kinds really showed they can compete with the best in the state." Uintah was able to enter two teams in the contest, because they have two teachers instructing law for the 11th and 12th grades. In addition to faculty sponsors the teams are coached by local lawyers who volunteer to help the students understand and prepare for their cases. John R. Anderson and John C. Beaslin of the firm of Beaslin, Nygard. Coke & Vincent served as the attorney coaches for the two teams. The lawyers meet with students and instructed them on the law. questioning ' methods and strategy. "I really enjoyed working with the lawyers," commended Donny Sawyer, a student witness. This year's case was a civil case involving" in-volving" custody ot an 18 year old who ballit, swears in witness Donny Swayer. i. In addition to the attorneys, each team also had to prepare witnesses who acted the parts of the peopie in the case. Donny Sawyer. Marrianne Kay. James Gurr. Damn Caldwell, Michele Swim and Joni Reynolds were the witnessess in the case. Students competed in the courthouses in Duchesne and American Fork before members of the Utah Bar who were either actual judges ol practicing attorneys. at-torneys. The Uintah team was choosen to compete in the semi-final round where they lost lo Kast High the two-time two-time defending champions in the mock Court competitions. Uintah High entered a second team, sponsored by faculty member Richard Robbins. that team consisted of Terry Gale. Denise Riding. Rochelle Hopson, Jana Brady. Shen Jackson. Adam Massey. Greg Robbins. Janet Slaugh. Bill Oswald. Derek Hem. and Cindy Jenkins They competed against Hiil Crest and Woods Cross, before dropping dropp-ing out of the competition. |
