Pet Week proclaimed May 3-7 f . - - PETS TAKE SPECIAL care and brushing this great dane are Philip and Jonathan Murphy, sons of Dr. and Mrs. Doug Murphy of Countryside Veterinarian Clinic. "Pets are faithful companions, bring smiles to the faces of young and old, give unquestioning love and meaning to the lives of many citizens," so declared a proclamation signed by Governor Scott Matheson making May 3 through 7 National Pet Week in Utah. This special week for pets is sponsored by the American Veterinary Medical Association. The two Vernal clinics, the Countryside Veterinary Clinic and the Ashley Valley Veterinary' Clinic, will welcome visits during the week from school groups. Scout groups and others, according to Dr. Douglas Murphy, Dr. John Mathis and Dr. Ed Oscarson. veterinarians at the clinics. Dr. Murphy at the Countryside clinic suggests some do's and don'ts for pet owners. Do's Do make a bed for your pet before bringing it home. Do feed your pet well-balanced meals every day. Do be patient in housebreaking your pet. Be firm and understanding. Do brush vour pet regularly. Animals love Tl.C. Do teach your pet to be obedient and well-behaved. Do reward your pet for good behavior. Do obey state, county and city ordinances on pet ownership. Do clean up litter your pet may make. Do take your pet to a veterinarian on a regular basis. Don'ts Don't buy a pet on a "whim." Don't overfeed your pet. Tablescraps can make a pet fat and sick. Don't punish your pet by hitting it. A tap and a firm scolding voice work far better. Don't forget your pet needs exercise. Don't bathe your pot too frequently. Don't yank on your pet's leash. Don't let your pet roam freely outside. Don't breed your pet without thinking carefully first. Some good questions to ask yourself tK'fore buying a pet. according to Dr. Murphy, are: Where will the pet live? What supplies w ill the pet need? Where w ill the pet eat, play and run? And what shots and care has the pet had? |
