Show PEETE WIN'S, ZOKOL FADES Calvin Peete, playing on his most productive course, fired a 3-under-par 69 Sunday to win his second Greater Milwaukee Open Golf Tournament title. The 38-year-old veteran from Detroit won by two shots in building a 72-hole total of 274. 14 under par for four trips over hilly Tuckaway Country Club. Peete, whose only other PGA Tour title came here in 1979, clinched his victory with a birdie on the 17th hole. Terry Diehl, a co-leader co-leader at the time, bogeyed the same 220-yard, 220-yard, par-three hole to drop from the lead in a dramatic two-shot swing. Diehl, 31, trying to shake a season-long slump, eventually settled for third place behind Victor Regalado of Mexico. Diehl, who had missed the cut in four of his last five tournaments, carded a 71, the same as Regalado, another slumping veteran. Regalado had a total of 276, 12 under par on the cool, sunny day on this 7,010 yard layout just south of Milwaukee. Regalado earned $27,000. Diehl, whose total was 277, won $17,000. Dick Zokol, the BYU product who shared the lead after each of the first three rounds, dropped out of contention with a bogey at 15, a double bogey at 16 and another bogey at 17, four shots above par in the three-hole stretch. The 23-year-old newcomer, wearing a radio headset to relax himself, slipped to a 75, but still enjoyed his best American finish by far. Zokol wound up tied for fifth with Morris Hatalsky and Larry Ziegler and earned $9,125, more than three times his previous total in 20 tour starts. Ziegler closed with a 70, while Hatalsky had 72 for their 279 totals. Wayne Levi, the 54-hole co-leader with Zokol, was tied for the lead after back-to-back birdies at six and seven. |
