Show 10 states hold primaries The results of primary elections in ten states have set up a pitched battle for a senate seat in California, a chance ; for a New Jersey congresswoman to become the third woman ever elected to the Senate, and the opportunity for the mayor of Los Angeles to become the first black elected governor of Claifornia. The candidates in California's senatorial primaries had to overcome popular opposition, with Gov. Edmund Brown, Jr., defeating two candidates, one of them novelist Gore Vidal, and San Diego Mayor Pete Wilson surviving a large field that included two ' congressman and presidential daughter Maureen Reagan. Brown and Murray agreed quickly to debate. Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, a former policeman, will square off against state Attorney General George Deukemejian, a law-and-order candidate, for the governorship in November. New Jersey congresswoman Millicent Fenwick, the pipe-smoking law maker who is a model for Doonesbury comic strip character, will face businessman Lautenberg for a senate seat form the Garden State. Vietnam era activist Tom Hayden won nomination for a state assembly seat in Santa Monica, Calif., and Roxanne Conlin, a former U.S. Attorney, will run against Iowa Lt. Gov. Terry Branstad for the governorship of that state. |
