Buckalew, who, also competes in football and baseball, was the starting guard on Uintah's basketball team. Buckalew and Derrin Gardiner were named to the Deseret News first team in Region 7. Burke Buckalew, a 5'10" guard on Uintah High School's basketball team, was named to the Salt Lake Tribune's Class 3-A second team. Other cagers selected to the second team were: Terry Murnin, Judge Memorial; Mark Averett, Springville; Jeff Bradford, Bountiful; David Corry, Cedar City; Jeff Emery, Davis; Ron Hill, Dixie; Mark Earnshaw, Woods Cross; Brent Maxwell, Highland; Steve Hendricks, Jordan and Dennis Fox, American Fork. Buckalew was the starting guard on the Uintah team and he scored in double figures in the state tournament with 16 points against American Fork and 14 counters against Davis. Named to the Tribune's first team were: Aaron McCarthy, Judge Memorial, most valuable player; Joel Rotta, Judge Memorial; Scott Hill, Box Elder; Randy Rawlings, Highland; Brett Applegate, Tooele; Dave Heaton, Provo; Kimball Hansen, American Fork; David King, Payson; Olies Dockery, Odgen and Paul Hansen, Viewmont. Derrin Gardiner, 6'4" forward at Uintah High School and Burke Buckalew were named to the Deseret News' first team in Region Seven. Gardiner had a number of games during the year for the Utes in double figures and he scored 17 points against American Fork and put in 20 counters in the game with Davis at the state tournament. Other first team region selections were Mike Reich, Jordan; Wesley Gross, Tooele and Steve Hendricks, Jordan. Named to the Deseret News' first team in the Class 3-A were Aaron McCarthy, Judge Memorial, MVP; Brett Applegate, Tooele, Olies Dockery, Ogden; Kimball Hansen, American Fork; Joel Rotta, Judge Memorial and Scott Hill, Box Elder. Union's forward, Clay Harrison, was named to the Salt Lake Tribune's Class 2-A first team. Also named to the team were Kirk Pendleton, Richfield, MVP; Todd Jeffs, Emery; Dana Russell, Morgan; Darryl Zenger, Wasatch; Steve Hubbard, Richfield; Rod Gleave, South Sevier; Dwain Skinner, South Sevier; Andrew Jensen, Millard and David Squire, Manti. Altamont's Mark Birch was named to the Class 1-A second team. Clay Harrison was placed on the Deseret News's Class 2-A second team. Tracy Neilson, Union, was named to region Nine's first team and Tracy Dye, Union, was placed on Region Nine's second team. Mark Birch, Altamont, was named the Class 1-A second team in the Deseret News and Tal Fabrizio, Duchesne, was named to Region Eleven's first team. |
