The biggest thorn in Iowa's side was Darrell Griffith, Grif-fith, who poured in 34 points. All-American center, Joe Barry Carroll Car-roll and other Purdue hoopsters were supposed to end UCLA's string of upsets, but they joined the Bruins' list of victims as they were thumped 67 to 62. UCLA's Kiki Vandeweghe popped in 24 points and the 7-foot-l Carrol was held to 17 points as it was difficult for Purdue to get the ball inside due to UCLA's outstanding defense. Vernal 8th had a 34 to 28 lead late in the second quarter, but Jensen nabbed a 36 to 35 lead early in the third quarter. However, Vernal 8th continued to hang in there as they put in six straight points to tie up the game at 51-51 early in the fourth quarter. Greg Gilroy stole the ball in the game, but he kept the points in the family as he delivered an aerial to his brother, Toby Gilroy, who fired in a field goal for two points. Brent Brown missed a shot at the basket, but he decided to stay where he was and not go on defense, and that proved pro-ved to be a smart move as Jensen stole the ball and it was fired to Brown for an easy two points. Rick Gardner, Kim Oliverson and I,on Hundley were the main point gainers for Vernal 8th in their rally in the fourth quarter. Hundley put in 21 pouts and Gardner, Oliverson put in 18 points in the game. Vernal 8th put in 28 field goals and Jensen fired in 33 two-pointers. However, Vernal 8th tossed in 25 out of 37 free throws and Jensen put in 5 out of 13. Kick Gardner was 10 for 11 from the foul line and Lon Hundley hit 7 out of 8 free throws.
