Show Hunter kills buffalo Vernal's Kent Williams entered the Henry Mountains in Southern Utah near Hanksville on Saturday and after two days of hunting action Williams blasted a buffalo, Sunday at 11 a.m. Williams was one of 27 hunters who won a yearly drawing for a once in a lifetime shot at a buffalo. There were 25 Utah hunters and two out of state buffalo hunters. The Vernal hunter's buffalo weighed 1700 pounds and was a 4 year old bull. "I waited ten minutes for him before I got a shot at him. There were 13 animals in the herd and I got the herd bull. I fired one shot behind the shoulders and ribs. I had to shoot him in the back to put him down," stated Williams. "Henry Mountains is the only place in the United Stated that I know of where they have a fair chase hunt on the free roaming buffalo herd." Williams used a 7mm magnum to blast the buffalo. Mrs. Kent Williams remarked, "Kent was tickled to death he got the big heard bull. An archer got one that was bigger, but Kent's was the second biggest. He hit him right behind the shoulders. The hunt was a hunter's choice, and only hunters, whose names were drawn out were allowed to take part. "I got my buffalo on the second day. Sixteen had been killed during those two days and only five were bulls. The others were cows and calves," said Williams. Buffalo hunters have to be well prepared for the hunt as they have to track the animals down in the wilderness, and they have to get off the beaten path. "Anyone who thinks it is an easy hunt is crazy. It is a fair chase hunt. You get out in the trees and wilderness and hunt them" stated Williams. "You have to be very well prepared. The hunter needs a four-wheel four-wheel drive, horses and heavy equipment to handle a heavy animal." |
