C Dickerson This is the time of year when most people are thinking about going fishing and not to many are thinking about big big- game hunting but this is a very important important important im im- period for deer elk antelope and moose hunters Why Because this is the time when hunts are set for these animals Division Conservation Officers and biologists along with personnel from the Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service have been spending a great deal of time in the last month gathering data that is very in formulating recommendations for fall hunts These recommendations will be besent besent sent to the Board of Big Game Control for final consideration Utah is unique in setting big game hunts in that we have a board that is responsible solely for big game This body started out as the Board of Elk Control and nd it evolved into the Board of Big Game Control It has five members The director of the Division of Wildlife Resources a representative representative representative a cattleman a sportsman and a member from the Forest Service Before this board receives any recommendations from the field all pertinent biological data that has been collected is discussed between in interagency interagency interagency in- in personnel in meetings held throughout the state this meeting is set for next week in Vernal Vema This is not a public meeting but representatives are invited from both the and sportsmens organizations The time for forthe forthe forthe the public to have their say comes later at the Big Game Board meetings This pretty well concludes the organization of the various boards What will the recommendations in general be for this falls fall's hunts Basically we can anticipate hunts similar to what we have had the last Jast four or five years for all aU game species unless there are problem areas that require some special management type hunts Most deer herds herd in our area are responding well to the type of hunts we have had the past few years One interesting aspect of the effect of winters on our big game winter ranges has come up during our last two win win win- This last year we had a severe drought and most of our browse did not put on any growth Then this past winter we had heavy snows and animals were forced on very low areas that had not been used in quite a few years Two winters ago we had very light weather and the animals stayed at very ery high elevations that had not had winter use for a long time So what this means is that our normal wintering areas have been only lightly browsed for two years which has been beena a relief considering the damage that could have occurred to our more important important important im im- middle ranges |
