Show LL 1 ey t 4 W 4 1 THREE E SELECTIVE INTAKE TOWERS designed design design- ed by the US U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and built by Construction Company of Seattle Wash are shown installed on the face of the Flaming Gorge Dam in northeastern Utah When in full operation operation th the towers will allow warmer surface water to be drawn through sliding control gates and discharged into the Green River below the dam thus heating up the breeding ground for trout and other aquatic life Mixing towers on Flaming Gorge to improve fishing Fishermen will once again be boasting about the size record-size trout they have just caught on the banks of the Green River when three huge intake intake intake in in- take mixing towers are in full operation on the face of the Flaming Gorge Dam Damin in northeastern Utah Designed by the US U.S. Bureau of Reclamation these massive steel structures were built by Construction Construction Construction Con Con- Company a Seattle cont contractor contractor contractor con con- tractor to heat up the breeding ground t for trout and to enhance conditions for other aquatic life in the Green River waters which run below the concrete dam After the dam was built buill 15 years ago the Green River was cleared of silt sill and became a fishermans fisherman's paradise But as the reservoir slowly filled over a number of years water flowing through three turbine intakes feet below the reservoir surface became j too cold for the fish to breed and grow To solve this environmental problem the US U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in cooperation with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources asked their engineers to come up with a solution Their proposal was a first of its kind Three selective intake structures or or towers 30 by 30 by feet long were constructed from steel wide flange beams to fit over existing The steel towers were then sheathed completely on two sides with Steel Corporations Corporation's m a corrosion resistant corrosion resistant zinc coated corrugated steel sheet product Approximately tons of were required Four 24 by feet 30 sliding gates were installed in openings on the face of each structure to permit withdrawal of water at varying depths in the reservoir McNally Mountain States Steel of Lindon Utah the steel for forthe forthe forthe the structure from tons of structural shapes rolled by Bethlehem Steel Corporation Bethlehem Steel also supplied 15 tons of industrial fasteners All Three intake structures were assembled on a huge raft moored to the bank of the reservoir and then flo floated ted near the center of the dam where they were capsized and flipped into final position for attachment at the open end to the dams existing structure When the project is completed the selective intake towers will allow warmer surface water to be drawn through the sliding control gates up to within 20 feet of the reservoir surface for discharge into the river below the dam By varying the temperature between 40 and 55 degrees according to the season of the year trout will breed and should grow to record size by the early Darrold E E.
