Show Second prototype oil owl shale shale j project approved in Colorado Approval of a 8 second prototype oil shale project In Colorado was given Thursday of last week by Secretary of the Interior Cecil D. D Andrus This lease Is tract C-a C Coal and the lessee is Rio Blanco Oil Shale Project which was formed by Gulf Oil Corporation and Standard Oil Company of Indiana Indiana Indiana In In- diana to develop the tract Gulf and Standard submitted the high bonus bid for Tract C-a C when it was sold March 1 1974 The tract is situated in the western part of Creek basin Tract C-b C whose development plan was approved approved ap ap- ap pro proved ed by Secretary Andrus on August 30 also alo is in the Creek basin Tract C Cb Cb C- C b will be developed by Occidental Occidental Occidental Oc Oc- Oil Shale Inc and Ashland Oil Inc The oil will be recovered from Crom the shale by a modified in situ process by burning the shale in underground retorts The modular phase of the project schedule will continue until November 1986 and the commercial phase is scheduled to begin production with the burning of the Initial retort in February 1987 Peak employment employment employment em- em during the con con- construction construction phase is expected to tobe tobe tobe be around 2500 in 1985 and the permanent work force is estimated at around 2057 beginning in 1987 Shaft sinking is scheduled to begin this year and the modular nodular development phase is expected to become operational in the latter part of 1979 The prototype oil shale program Secretary Andrus said is designed ned to test the economic and environmental viability ty of r oil from the vast shale hale deposits This resource is estimated to exceed 18 trillion barrels of oil in the Green River formation In Colorado Utah and Wyoming WHETHER those programs will continue through to the commercial stages will depend to a great extent on whether the processes are environmentally acceptable Secretary Andrus said The area oil shale supervisor Peter A A.
