Show AN UNFORTUNATE OCCURENCE. There is at present in Logan an old gentleman who is very ill. He arrived from Germany about the First of June; and has since that time been living with his brother, Mr. Thomas Bitter. As considerable talk has been indulged in with regard to to the illness of Mr. Bitter, we deem it advisable to publish the facts as we have learned them. He arrived in Ogden after his long journey, ill and penniless. Application was made by him to the ticket office of the U. & N. R. R. Co. [Utah and Northern Railway Company], for passage over the road. He could talk no English; but he contrived to make himself understood. A paper was given him, which he understood was to carry him from Ogden to Logan, in consideration of the fact that his luggage was to be held at the latter point until fare should be paid. While on the trip, the conductor - who was not the regular person engaged in the capacity of passenger conductor, deeming the "pass" a fictitious one, (or at least one not entitled to full consideration) ordered the old gentleman off at Collinston, nearly 9 miles from Logan, at a time between 9 and 10 o'clock at night. The party thus ejected walked to Logan arriving here at 2 o'clock next morning. Since then he has been seriously ill. There are many other facts to be stated in connection with this affair; but as the matter may be brought before the public in a direct way before long, we refrain from further comment. |
