Show OUR NEW GOVERNOR, Eli H. Murray, is directly interested in a newspaper published at Louisville, in his native state. The journal is the Commercial, and if its utterances are made under proper authority, the people of Utah have cause for congratulation in the fact that Governor Murray is to be a friend to the whole people and not alone to some petty party, sect, or clique. We give below a paragraph from a late copy of the Commercial: There is a general impression that Governor Murray, who left Kentucky last evening en route to assume the duties of Governor of Utah, goes, as did Saint Paul before he was "met on the way," to hold men to Judgment for presuming to believe in the new dispensation. The Mormon church, as we understand it, outside of its open violation of the laws of the land relating to polygamy, differs but little, and that in what are known as non essentials, from the average ??? of Presbyterian, Baptist or Methodist churches in our own section. It is estimated that out of that great population of Utah, amounting to nearly 200,000 Mormons, only about 12,000 or 15,000, all told, counting men and women together are to-day living in polygamy, and thereby defying in the laws and customs of the civilized world. Outside of the polygamous law-breakers, the majority of Mormons are living in obedience to the laws of the United States, it is not understood by those who look at these matters form the stand-point of common sense that the new Governor enters upon a crusade against "Mormon" religion. He will enter upon his duties allowing neither Mormon nor Gentile, but only law-abiding and non-law-abiding citizens. With this distinction along in view, it is believed that he will be the most popular, as well as the most useful, governor the teritory [territory] has had for many years. |
