Show "Fubar skateboard team works out on touqh course By Brett Bentley Kt; wind blew cold over '"'the sand and over the at ,ne. The skaters laid their boards down and surveyed the landscape for any possible course to lead themselves. They skated for ten or twenty feet. They picked up their boards and walked across the rock. They came to what is known by the Red Rock Fubar skating team as the Fubowl. The Fubowl is a natural waterway that widens into a deep and smooth cut banked on both sides by nearly even stone. The approaches, grades, and curves are known well by those who skate it. It is a challenging and fast run and can be worked as many different ways as the skater will let himself. "How would you approach ap-proach that bank?" "Oh, I don't know. You might try swinging around from . that first turn." Swinging around from the first turn was attempted. It didn't work. "Hey, don't blame me, I just told you what I thought might work. Try it again and let me see what you're doing wrong." "Maybe if I just came straight into it." "Oh, sure, I'd like to see that." They moved on to the transport run which would given them easy access to The Face, The Mogels, The Slide, The Fastest Run, The Longest Run, Widow Slayer, Esdyar, The Gardens, various race courses and unnamed runs. Altogether they form a group called The Runs of Magic Fools. Besides just the runs it is possible, for those who wish to and are willing to try, to skate from the top of a set of runs. It has been called crosscountry cross-country skating but basically basic-ally it has no official name. There are challenges chal-lenges in this activity that require some skill, not just a lot of practice, but real genuine, down to earth skill. There are no sure ways down; the skater evaluates the stone and finds a probable path. It requires strong ankles and knees to guide the board, strong elbows to take in falls ; skill to manuever the board around rocks, over small clefts, steep inclines and ruts in the stone; good judgment and evaluation; and a bit of good old insanity. The rider finds himself dodging back and forth as if in a pylon race. Rocks are the main hazard. haz-ard. They seem to find the best places to hide, they allow no time for a quick dismount, and they can stop a moving board fairly fast. "Why not just move the rocks out of the way?" "That rock has been sitting there all by itself with no help from anyone for who knows how long, years maybe. It has been resting there, unbothered for ages. It was put there by the verv hand of GnH and you want me to move it just so I can skate?" The Rred Rock Fubar Team who accepts the challenges of skateboarding skateboard-ing on nature's track includes: in-cludes: Ricky Berry, Dudley Irish, Bruce Burd, Randy Lumbardie, Jim Wiler, David Erbanek, Joe Arnold, Scott Bentley, Brett Bentley, and Dale Irish. Over the last two weeks the Rred Rock Skating Club has met three times, once at school and twice skating. The club is open to anyone who wants to join. If interested, contact Bruce Burd. |
