Show If; f'sYourWidife J J ' ylonservatlon Officer J In general, archery hunters statewide found the woods less crowded than last year. Field personnel around the state reported the archer seen less than in previous seasons. Locally, the general patterns pat-terns were not true. Instead of fewer archers afield, the increase was quite noticeable. A rough estimate from field checks indicated approximately approximate-ly 8 to 10 of the arches filling their tags, which is a figure higher than normal. High success the opening week can be attributed to good hunting conditions-fair weather with moist ground conditions. While the persistent archers arch-ers fling arrows, other sportsmen sports-men will engage in the annual opening of the Dove and Band-Tail pigeon season on September 1. Again there are several wildlife violations that occur most frequently during these hunts. Before going afield, it is best to consult the Mourning Mourn-ing Dove and Band-Tailed pigeon proclamation. Some Quick Wildlife regulations regula-tions to remember are: 1) proper shooting hours; 2) with chamber and magazine combined three shells is the maximum a legal shotgun can hold; 3) "baiting" is prohibit ed; 4) hunter safety course required for hunters under 21 years of age; 5) shooting birds on power or telephone lines prohibited; 6) ammunition in the chamber while in or on the vehicle is illegal. gkc-Antelope gkc-Antelope season for permit . holders will get underway Sept. 3, lasting through Sept. 11. A total of 250 permits were issued throughout the state. Possibilities for success vary va-ry from unit to unit. Hatch Point antelope unit will be closed this year, Cisco unit will have 10 hunters pursuing buck antelope, legal animals must have horns longer than their ears. -gkc-It seems that our friendly neighboring state of Wyoming has an overabundance of Bighorn Big-horn sheep. Both Utah and Idaho will receive transplants, hopefully this winter. If all comes true. Mount Nebo will be the Erst area within Utah to receive a release, -gkc- Fall bear hunters can begin their pursuit September 1, 1977, with the hunt lasting until October 15, 1977. Locally,- the season will still be closed during the elk hunt (on the elk unit) and during the antelope hunt (on the Cisco antelope unit). The season limit is one bear, any bear shall be legal except cub or sow accompanied accompani-ed by young. "Baiting" shall be illegal. gkc-An gkc-An outdoor tip for future KNIFE buyers follows: When buying a new knife, check whether the blade is made of stainless or carbon steel. Each has its advanUg- es. Carbon steel can be sharpened shar-pened more quickly and easily than stainless, but a stainless blade holds its edge longer and won't discolor. (Field & Stream, Sept. 1977). -gkc- |
