Show City beg ins wate r chlorination MiMb City began chlorinating its mer system this week. City Adminis-xx Adminis-xx Dive Bretike told The Times In-spendent In-spendent Wednesday. The 10-inch line from the City Park ns tkiorinated beginning Monday. Mr. Jttike said, the the 16-inch line from Rmch was chlorinated Tuesday. He said the city is taking more c:p!es and continuing to check to find rtr the contamination is coming from. ?Corbin well has not been used for a ii sr.)," Bretzke said, "but the problem ' lit be in the line leading from the J i-bin well to the main transmission i, be." Sanitarian Da e Johnson con- aied thit some forms of coliform 'J atteria can be present in the soil or in tt , aarials used in joints and valves of I iwr pipes. Some strains of total idorms have a wide distribution in the STiroament, he said. However, he j iccted out the relative presence of the 'Mi coliform group merits consideration a in indicator of pollution in drinking 'S5 j nter systems. Johnson said he had conferred with Dan Blake, of the State Health Division, who confirmed that no live fecal coliform had been found in tests of Moab water. He said that when coliform is found, and live fecal coliform is not present, it is assumed the contamination is coming from soil, pipes and joints. He quoted the National Interim Primary Drinking Water Regulations which state, 'The presence of any coliform bacteria, fee?' t non-fecal, in treated water should noi be tolerated," and "inasfar as bacterias are concerned, the coliform group is considered a reliable indicator of the adequacy of treatment." Johnson tested the water Wednesday Wednes-day and found .2 parts per million of residual chlorine present, which he U'rrr.'-d "an an-eptible level." However, results of tesis for coliform levels will not be available for several days, at least, he pointed out. Some Samples OK There were 19 of 34 water samples taken Aug. 8-10 that exceeded the allowable limit of one coliform per 100 milliliters of water. These were recheck-ed, recheck-ed, and results from 811 Mountain View, Western River Expeditions, Phillips 66, sewer plant and Chamber of Commerce locations have now had two consecutive samples come back OK. Others have either not come back yet, or have come back showing unacceptable results. Local authorities continue to be concerned, and to check samples. Said Johnson, "It (the pollution) seems to be too widespread and hit and miss. We can't make heads or tails of it right now." He continued, 'There doesn't seem to be any pattern to isolate the sources. We are still testing to find the area or areas where the source is coming from." Testing Sources Water Superintendent Lynn Day was to check all water sources currently in use Wednesday. These had not been tested since early July. Some people have been going to the river spring by Lion's Park for drinking water. Johnson said he doesn't know what the status of that water is. To date this year there have been 3 wat; - . samples tested from Lion's Park and from the spring. All have been satisfactory. satisfac-tory. 'Testing of the spring is inconclusive," inconclu-sive," said Johnson. There has not been enough testing there this year to reliably assess the quality of the water, he explained. Moab's percentage of unsatisfactory water samples, proportionately, is higher high-er than other communities in Grand and San Juan Counties, he said. Continued Page A8 Water... He termed Blanding "pretty fair." They missed sampling in April but then made up for it in June, he ; noted. "By and large samples ; (in Blanding) have been good" I said the sanitarian.
