Cox soared 13 feet to break his own record and logged more flying time by placing plac-ing in the high jump. Moab Thinchds Take Third Big Title En Giasif Mesa Invitational Meet Color the Mesa College Invitational Track Meet red and white - the Moab Red Devils have done it again. Moab thinclads, for the third straight year, ran off with the Class B title Saturday, at Grand Junction, by a 50 to 30 margin over Cedaredge. Colorado. The meet was the largest larg-est ever track meet in Utah or Colorado. Twenty-six Twenty-six schools figured in the class B scoring, but it was really a contest between two schools, Moab and Ce-daredge. Ce-daredge. Cedaredge star, Bill Kehmeier, won all four of the events he entered en-tered and each was a new record. His 14.0 for the high hurdles, 19.3 for the low hurdles and 45' 5" in the triple jump will rank him nationally. For Moab, the win was a team victory. The Devils won four events and were second in four events. However, they placed two men in four events including includ-ing a one-two finish in the long juni'i that scored 10 points. There were move entries in the individual events than ever before. An example was in the 100 yard dash where 64 boys competed and nine heats were required. The long jump had 51 entries. The four firsts came in two field events and two running events. Paul Cox soared 13 feet in the pola vault on his first try at that height to break his own Mesa record by ten inches. Cox has won the event and set a record for three straight years. He did not attempt to go higher. Danny Robinson leaped 20' S'A" in the long jump to win that event. Robinson, Robin-son, a junior, and Steve Stout, a sophomore, locked lock-ed horns in the jumping, event. The two Moab jumpers jump-ers left the field in their avake as they traded the lead in the finals. Stout ended with a 20' 4" jump to grab the second place medal. Third was a foot back. Robinson spent the day jumping, making the finals of the triple jump (an event not held in Utah). His final jump of 41' 5!,2" was good for third place and a new Moab record. re-cord. Soph. Greg Holland breezed bre-ezed through the 440 yard d-ish in 54.3 to win that event by a margin of .2 ot a second. Eight heats were required in that event ev-ent and Moab did not fare well in the assignments. Holland won in spite of that and Danny Robinson picked up a fourth place with 55.0. The final, first plaC2 went to the Mile Relay team of Steve Walston, Steve Stout, Dan Robinson and Greg Holland. The quartermilers won their heat by 160 yards and ended up seven seconds ahead of their nearest rival ri-val to put the meet title out of reach. The relay victory was the fourth straight year for Moab. With over 500 boys entered, en-tered, balanced scoring was needed and Moab had it. Von Isaman placed second sec-ond in the high jump and barely missed a place in the high hurdles final against fierce competition. Paul Cox added a fifth place in the high jump. Dave Bierschied was second sec-ond in the 100 yard clash with a personal best of 10.3. Dave was barely edged out of first in the final two yards. In the 880 yard run Moab's two entries placed third and fifth with Kurt Blust running run-ning 2:12.1 for the third place medal and Steve Walston getting fifth at 2:13.0. The 880 relay team of Dave Bierscheid. Mark Riley, Lenny Walterschied and Steve Stout ran into a tartar in Cedaredge. Mo. , ab ran 1:38.2 for second j but it took a record setting set-ting effort by the Colorado Colora-do school to beat them. Top scorer for Moab was Dan Robinson with 12 u2 points in four events. Cox, in addition to setting a meet record, set a new school standard for the pole vault. Other than Moab, Mo-ab, Utah schools did net fare well. East Carbon's . X Sophomore, Von Isaman gave the airborne air-borne division of Moab more points with a second place finish in the high jump. Robinson also triple-jumped triple-jumped for third place. |
