Mr. and Mrs. Fred Weihing, Larry and Freddy are spending a month in Green River living in one of the Peacock Pea-cock houses, while Fred works for his brother George at the American Hulk Plant and the Robbers Rob-bers Roost Motel. They will return to Provo for the fall quarter of BYU where Fred is a student. Helps Local Project. . . Canyonlands Expeditions Expedi-tions keeps its aluminum beer cans separate when sacking trash to bring off the river trips, and Monday Mon-day gave a whole binfull to the local Beta Zeta chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha. The sorority has been saving cans, and flattening them for shipment ship-ment to develop a fund for building restroomsat the City Park. They refer to the flattening process as "stomping cans" and it runs into a job. The group is most grateful to Canyonlands, not only for the addition of their summer's sum-mer's collection, butalso that the cans are ready to ship. Class Reunion Planned. . Sunday, August 12, has been set for a class reunion re-union of the Class of 52. This is the first time that Noel Baker could be tagged, and Dwendle Wilcox, Wil-cox, Jay Vetere, Phyllis Burr, lona and Barbara Ekker are rounding up the rest of the class to see what the last 19years have brought about. There will be a picnic at the City Park, beginning begin-ning at 2:00 o'clock, and the afternoon will be spent visiting and getting re-acquainted. Noel, now a Major in the Air Force, has just returned from Turkey, where he had a two-year assignment, and will leave later this fall for Thialand for a year's stint. Membership Drive. . . Woman's Club is planning plan-ning a membership drive for their first meeting at the Legion Hall on Sept. 6 at 8:00 in the evening. even-ing. Other ladies who have recently moved into town, or who for some reason, rea-son, have never belonged will be invited specially, but if any are overlooked, and want to be a part of a going concern, the club is most anxious for them to come out and be counted. Temple Mountain .' . . The Swaseys often come down onto the San Rafael Desert to chase wild horses, many of which were from their original stock strayed from the Sinbad area. In 1913, they camped at South Temple and found an outcropping of uranium. uran-ium. They located some claims, went back and registered them and for a couple of years mined intermittently at South Temple. v The uranium they mined min-ed was carnotite from trees, and they located and excavated a tree, hand sorting the ore. The ore was shipped to Denver, Den-ver, and then probably to Scotland, as was the first ore from this area that Marie Curie used in her experiments. Garvins Camp on the desert was then active, and John Folsom and John Galley lived there. Galley grubstaked the boys for a while, but when they had mined the available ore, the whole thing was abandoned. While there, the Swaseys built the two rock houses that are still to be seen at South Temple. New Doctor Arrives . . Dr. and Mrs. (Kelly) Robert Scribner arrived on Monday to begin practice prac-tice at the Medical Center. Cen-ter. They have leased the Lloyd Mecham house on Pearl Street, and are moving in. Dr. Scribner states that he will get practice set up as soon as possible, pos-sible, hopefully the latter lat-ter part of this week. Family Reunion . . . Mr. and Mrs. Odell Anderson and children, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Sherrill, Sher-rill, daughter LaRae Fullmer Ful-lmer from Monticello and Mrs. Marian Allen and children attended a family fam-ily reunion of the Don Carlos Seely descendants at Upper Joes Valley on Sunday. There were 89 members of the family on hand to visit and reminisce. rem-inisce. Attend Family Reunion Mr. and Mrs. Bill Reay and family, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Hatch and baby from Hanksville, and Mr. and Mrs. Gary Ilowland all drove to Starvation Reservoir at Duchesne on Sunday for a Davics family reunion. About 80 people attended, and enjoyed en-joyed a family sing and some good visiting during the afternoon. Engagement Told . . . Mr. and Mrs. Melvin nounce the engagement and forthcoming mar-raige mar-raige of their daughter, Cindy Marie to Von Roy Bowerman, son of Mrs. Mario liver Bower -man and the late Leroy Bowerman of Green River. Miss Roberts is a 1973 graduate of the Savanna High School, and Von Roy was graduated from the Green River school this year, also. He is currently current-ly employed at the House of Marble in Grand Junction. Jun-ction. The couple plan an Aug. 11, wedding at the LDS Chapel with a reception following at the Cultural Hall of the church. Bishop Bis-hop Hansen will officiate. To Provo . . k. " Mrs. Florence'' How-land How-land drove to Provo where she met Mrs. Dorothy Giles and son Doug and they all visited Mrs. Marian Jensen, who is a patient at the Provo Utah Valley Hospital. Marian was badly injured in-jured in an accident where her husband died about a month ago. Since then she has had surgery once or twice, and is still badly incapacitated. However, Mrs. How-land How-land reports that she is most courageous and cheerful, which is borne out by other members of the family who have spent some time with her. She told Mr. and Mrs. Harold Anderson the other day that her small grandson has a problem. He is al-. most ready to go to school this fall, and was asking his father, Ron Bick-more, Bick-more, if when he went to school, Ron would still be his father. Ron reassured re-assured him on the point. "When I get to be a big boy, they will you still be my daddy?" Yes, Ron, said, he would. "When I die and go to Heaven, will you still be my daddy?" Ron fielded that one, too. After a bit, the youngster remarked, re-marked, "I never will have a motorcycle." Marian has a long hospitalization hos-pitalization ahead of her, and would appreciate hearing from her many friends in this area. She will stay with her sister, Mrs. Merle Baldwin for a few days. Visits Health Center. . . Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Peacock spent a couple of weeks at the Pleasant Meadow Retreat at Boulder, Boul-der, Colorado where Ellis El-lis received treatment for his arthritis. Mrs. Dora Dean Jewkes kept the Curio Shop open during dur-ing their absence. Student Vacations. . . 3 David Engleman, Jr. is spending his summer vacation va-cation helping get the 1 KOA campground running. run-ning. He is home for vacation va-cation from Michigan Tech at Houghton, Michigan Mich-igan and will return to his studies on the 21st. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Baker Ba-ker and Harry Thompson and Verna Jean Hubbs attended the boat races on Utah Lake on Sunday. Attends Convention. . . i Judy Ann and Bob Scott returned this past week from the International Convention of Epsilon Sigman Alpha which was held in Phoenix, Arizona on July 18 thru 22nd. Mrs. Scott represented her chapter Beta Zeta of Green River as well as the Utah State Council of which she is. president. presi-dent. She attended various vari-ous meetings and workshops work-shops set up for assisting assist-ing the members to obtain ob-tain extensive information informa-tion on the betterment of their chapters and state activities and projects locally. Featured guest speaker speak-er of the convention was actorcomedian Danny Thomas expressing his appreciation of the support sup-port ESA has given to St. Jude Children's Research Re-search Hospital in Memphis, Mem-phis, Tennessee. Mr. Thomas reported on the outstanding progress that has been made to date at the facility. ESA sponsors spon-sors a Bike Ride which is an International Project Pro-ject to raise funds for the hospital each year. Mr. Scott enjoyed several sev-eral tours of the Phoenix area while there; they included Barry Goldwa-ters Goldwa-ters Radio Shack, Surf City and some of the beautiful homes in the Scottsdale area. In route home from Phoenix the Scott's stayed stay-ed over in Las Vegas, Nevada for several days taking in a few shows and sight seeing at Boulder Dam. STATIONS CUT HOURS OF OPERATION Green River Local service station managers man-agers have reduced their operating hours from 24 to 10 and claim to have enough gasoline on hand to last through July. At least one station will be open through the night to meet motorist demands for fuel and help prevent a "strand- ed motorist" situation like the one that occurred occur-red toward the end of June when local service station ran out of gasoline. gaso-line. Laddie King, a local station manager, estimates esti-mates a 40 per cent drop in traffic since the gasoline shortage began. be-gan. He said he divides his gasoline quota and sells 1,500 gallons a day to stay in operation six days a week. When that daily quota is sold, he closes. Dwendle Wilcox, another ano-ther station manager, says he is pumping 1,700 gallons of gasoline per day and anticipates no shortage for the end of the month. But, Dean Jewkes has a different problem at his station. He says he is having problems finding find-ing help to pump the. gasoline and not a shortage short-age of gasoline. |
