Show Forester Going to Iran On Advisory Team Gordon L,. Watts, who has been Deputy Regional Forester for the Inter-mountain Inter-mountain Region of the Forest Service since 1906, has accepted an assignment as-signment with a Department Depart-ment of Agriculture Advisory Ad-visory team that will go to Iran this fall to help develop that country's agriculture economy. In announcing the four members of the team already al-ready chosen, Secretary of Agriculture Karl L. Butz identified Mr. Watts as a specialist in the management of grazing lands. About seven of the Department's De-partment's specialists in different disciplines will be sent to Iran and they will remain for 18 months. Technical assistance as-sistance provided by this team will be financed by Iran, according to an agreement between the two governments. Mr. Watts, a recognized recog-nized authority on multiple mul-tiple use management of .National Forest lands and resources, has a broad background of experiences experi-ences which qualify him for the Iranian team. Much of his career has been in the Intermountain Region, where the administration admin-istration of range re- sources in a climate sim ilar to that in Iran plays an important role in the overall management of the National Forests. He also served as Assistant Assist-ant Regional Forester for the Division of Watershed Water-shed and Multiple Use before being promoted to Deputy Regional Forester. Forest-er. Other assignments included a tour of duty on the staff of the Forest Service Chief in Washington, Wash-ington, D. C, and in Idaho Ida-ho he was District Ranger Rang-er on the Boise National Forest, Assistant Forest Supervisor of the Challis National Forest, and Foresl, Supervisor of the Targhee National Forest. Mr. Watts graduated with a degree in forestry from the University of Michigan in 1941, but his Forest Service career was delayed while he served as a captain in the U.S. Army in World War II. He is a member of the Society of American Ameri-can Foresters, Soil Conservation Con-servation Society, and the Ogden Kiwanis Club. Mr. Watts will be accompanied ac-companied to Iran by his wife Virginia. i |
