Show National Winners Announced In ElksCompetition . John M. Walker, former chief national executive i :' -r of the Benevolent and Pn tive Order of Elks and presently chairman of the board of trustees of the Elks National Foundation, has announced an-nounced the winners in the 1976 scholarship competition. The Foundation is awarding 998 scholarships worth over $740-thousand, largest amount in its 48-year history. First place awards of $3,000 scholarships for each of four years went to 17-year-old Vicky Lee Gour of Roy, Utah, sponsored by Roy Lodge No 2338 and to 18-year-old Michael Mich-ael Andrew Montgomery of Elizabethton, Tennessee, sponsored sp-onsored by Elizabethton Lodge No. 1847. Second place award of a $2,500 scholarship for each of four years went to Mark Hughes Egan, sponsored by Bountiful, Utah Lodge No 2442. Two young ladies tied for second place so the second and third place awards were pooled and equally divided at $2,250 each between Cheeyen ' Bo-Linn, sponsored by Houst- r on Texas Lodge No. 151 and Dorothy Parrish, sponsored by 1 the Bountiful, Utah Lodge also. 5 Third place award of a $2,000 scholarship for each of four years went to Donald Coburn Fithian, sponsored by Bridgeton, N.J. LoiJie No. 733. Also announced were 992 other scholarships for one year each, ranging in value from $1,750 to $600. Major criteria considered in judging are scholastic achievement, achieve-ment, financial need, leadership, leader-ship, citizenship, resourcefulness, resourceful-ness, personality, perseverance, persever-ance, patriotism and general worthiness. Competition is open to high school seniors only, with no regard for race, religion, national origin nor relationship to any member of the Order of Elks. Judging is done by a panel of distinguished Americans, Amer-icans, not necessarily members mem-bers of Elks. The Elks National Foundation Founda-tion was established in 1928 by the late Past Grand Exalted Ruler John F. Malley of Boston. It began with a fund of $100,000 given by the Grand Lodge of the Order and through tax-exempt contributions contribu-tions has grown to its present book value of over $29-million dollars. None of the principal funds are ever spent, only the earnings from prudent investments invest-ments are distributed each year to deserving young . people. All operating expenses of the Foundation are borne by the Gand Lodge. Well over $12-million dollars have been distributed since it began operations 48 years ago.
