Show McKay Urges Kaiparovnts Development In Speach on floor of Home Washington -- Congressman Con-gressman Gunn McKay today urged the immediate immedi-ate development of the Kaiparowits power project pro-ject in Southern Utah. Speaking on the floor of the House of Representatives, Repre-sentatives, Rep. McKay said America's energy self - sufficiency would depend on the speed with which the country makes use of the coal reser- ves, and cited the estimated esti-mated one billion tons of recoverable coal in the Kaiparowits Plateau area as incentive to proceed immediately with the project. "The Kaiparowits project pro-ject has been in the planning plann-ing stages for over ten i years' said Rep. McKay, Mc-Kay, "and it already has been delayed by a site denial from the Interior Department. It should proceed immediately." If the plant were in operation op-eration today, McKay said, it would be saving 33 million barrels of oil a year. Current market value of this oil ap- proaches $250 million, McKay said, more oil than the total annual combined com-bined petroleum use of Utah. "There are some legitimate le-gitimate environmental concerns," said Rep. McKay, "but the participating partici-pating power companies will employ the most advanced ad-vanced technology available avail-able in abating any emissions. emis-sions. None of the coal will be recovered through strip mining, and I'm convinced that the environmental envi-ronmental imDact in the State will be negligible. McKay also cited the economic benefits for Utah, with the plant bringing at least 6200 jobs to Kane County and related housing and tax revenues. ' "The plant could be functioning five years after af-ter the start of construction, construc-tion, but delays are killing kill-ing us," said McKay. "If the country is to rely on its own resources, and become self-sufficient in its energy use, we must rely on coal, at least at first. It is available and abundant, and the technology tech-nology for its use is here now.
