Show Community Action Council Hears Reports From Local Officers Rick Martinez, State Director Di-rector fur Emergency Food and Medical Services, Mike McCoy, State Director of the Office of Economic Appur-tunity, Appur-tunity, Dede Corradini, Public Pub-lic Relations for the Governor's Gover-nor's office of Community Affairs, Af-fairs, all from Salt Lake City Marie Tibbit Director of Field Operations from CAP in Price and Bud Lincoln from the Moab office of the Utah Department of Employment Security attended a meeting of the Community Action Council Oct. 12 held in the old LDS church building. Mr. Martinez explained the problems of the Emergency Food Program. This program provides nutrition and diet preparation education and food stamp recruiting. A state sta-te co-ordinator will come into in-to the area upon request to monitor and evaluate food programs for the poor and provide information concerning concern-ing food programs to the community. Also discussed at this time were local problems prob-lems of the Food Stamp Program Pro-gram which is handled through the Welfare Agency. Mr. McCoy spoke of some of the problems of the Title I program during the past and recent progress of the education of the economically disadvantaged. 70 percent of those who are educationally disadvantaged are also economically econ-omically disadvantaged. Hi; has just toured several poverty pov-erty areas of the State ef Utah which he feels have a need as great as those of the Appalachia area where he spent a year as a Vista Volunteer. Vol-unteer. 22 people died in Utah last year from malnutrition and starvation. The need for effective education along these lines is great. Locally Mr. Sundwall of the school district was commended com-mended for his help in getting get-ting information to the public pub-lic concerning free or reduced reduc-ed rate school lunches. Mr. Lincoln spoke of the need in the Moab area to identify the responsibilities and the programs in order to get the full support of local, county and s!ate agencies. The Manpower program is under the Department of Labor La-bor and provides jobs and job training for adults and youths. The Neighborhood Youth Corp. comes under Manpower, and is a work training program which came about from the Economic Opportunity Op-portunity Act of 1964. The Southeastern Community Action Ac-tion Program has been the sponsoring agency for the NYC, 29 youth have been enrolled en-rolled in the summer NYC program in Grand County in the past 3 years. This pro-pram pro-pram is primarily aimed at helping youth earn money to be able to return to school, or stay in school as the case may be. They, must work for a non-profit organization or government agencies and have good job supervision in their training. The local Employment Em-ployment Security office, as a community, service helps find the youngsters who are able to qualify for jobs under OEO guidlines. More motivation is needed to get the local people in tin Moab area interested in their Community Action Council. Anyone, who is now getting, or would like more information informa-tion on Food Stamps, who has a child in the Headstart School Program, who has children getting free or reduced re-duced rate lunches, who is interested in a marketing outlet for handcrafted items, and most important, anyone who might be interested in helping in anyway or giving their ideas should attend meetings of the Community Action Council. Election of new officers will take place at the next meeting to be announced an-nounced later and hopefully by then we will have a mailing mail-ing list in effect. There wiii De an an day session of Welfare Rights Training to be held Wed. Oct. 20, first meeting at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. for the afternoon meeting. Marie Darling, President Pres-ident of the Utah Welfare Rights Program will be in charge of these meetings, to be held in the old LDS church building.
