Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablctt Another field days has come and gone. Field day for copper employees is one of the red letter days for our community. This year's feature ball game ended in a tie. The game had to be called at the end of the ninth in order to get in all of the events. Bingham's amateurs looked anything any-thing but amateurized in holding hold-ing the Magna entry of the Industrial In-dustrial league to a tie. Les Sumnicht's boys had a two run lead going into the lust of the seventh which was supposed to be the end, but a dropped fly ball with two out, then a pinch double dou-ble by Magna's manager Radulo-vich Radulo-vich tied it up. Big Jack Knud-sen Knud-sen was on the mound for the locals lo-cals and he pitched swell ball. Magna started Keith Barton, their regular first baseman, but they soon found that wouldn't do so they brought in Evans and the little outfielder showed in more stuff than any Magna pitcher this year. Didn't see any of the races or the softball game but I understand under-stand our local talent held their own. I have told you before but here goes again. Don't be surprised if Bingham isn't crowned state amateur champions. The fight last Monday night at Derks field between Remo Polidori and J. T. Ross was as good as has been seen here in a long time. Ross just had too much power for the Tooele boy and he won by a KO in the ninth round. About 3000 fans turned out for the card and all went home well pleased. This month sees the wind up of most of the baseball in Utah, but it will be a busy 30 days. The state American Legion tournament is being held this week end in Brigham City and the end of the month finds Salt Lake staging the Western division divis-ion finals. Magna is our district representative and they go a-gainst a-gainst East Carbon from Sunny-side Sunny-side at 6 o'clock tonight, Thursday. Thurs-day. My guess is Magna to win the championship. This is the first time n many years that Bingham hasn't been an entry. In the Western tournament we will find California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Hawaii. The winner of this one goes into the little world series. Brigham City is staging on the 28th of August, a school for youngsters in baseball and it is a project that every community in the state should take up. The ball players of the Brigham City Industrial league team are giving their time to act as instructors and the town recreation department depart-ment is furnishing the funds. They are expecting a big turn out from the northern part of the state. Will give you more dope on this as it goes along. See you next week. AL |
