It U a pleasure to pay him this i brief tribute. Julius Wimmer, who over thirty years ago established the Yankee Polish Co. is the lead-er in his field, having originated the polish that is the only manu-factured furniture and class po-lish on the market, ana is dis-tributed throughout the western states area. He brings this pro-duct to our local people at a very low cost due to his low cost me-thods of operation. Mr. Wimmer has a well earned reputation for progressiveness because he has consistently forged ahead in his business never letting up in his etforts to make the service his company renders to the people more valuable. This invariable has made the Yankee Policy Co. outstanding in its field a fact that is well known to the public in the Salt Lake City area. It is such men as he who are both successful in business and appreciative of their civic obli-gations that arc deserving of re-cognition. We take pleasure in publicly giving Julius Wimmer the credit for his accomplish-ments which his friends and as-sociates have so long accorded him. RAY E. SIIOWELL Our issue today proposes to call the attention of our readers to some of those progressive and civic minded people who have contributed their share of time and energy to the building up ot Salt Lake City and the inter-mounta- in area to the position of prominence which it enjoys at present. One of the men to whom we wish to call the attention of our readers is Mr. Ray E. Showell, the owner and operator of the Westminster Cleaners & Dyers. He has a thorough knowledge of the many technical phases of the cleaning and dyeing business, and has never spared himself in his aggressive march forward. He is a business man whose com-petitors respect as much as do nil others with whom he comes in contact. Ray Showell is at all times conscious of his civic responsi-bilities and may be depended up-on to meet in every detail the many opportunities which pre-sent themselves to be of service to his city. Mr. Showell's record ot achievement is one of which he may well be proud. His value to his city and this district is an established fact and we hasten to give him the credit which is justly due. TANNER Generally speaking, civic pride is one of those things that goes hand-in-han- d with success, be-cause a man must have been successful to fully appreciate the advantages that were afforded him by the community in which he lives. Mr. Winvvard F. Tanner. Pres. of the Western Equipment Co. Inc. is one of those progressive business men of Salt Lake City who has shown his appreciation for his success by his attention to civic matters. Ilis willingness to become a cog in the wheel of community progress, when ever united effort is needed to put ever some movement or project advanced for the good of his city. WILFORD 0. JOHNSON Every progressive, successful business man in Salt Lake City contributes in some manner to the growth and progress of the city. And a man who is always willing to do his bit in both bus-iness and civic activities is Mr. Wilford 0. Johnson, Pres. of the. Western School Supply Co. Inc., who is well known and has many friends throughout the inter-niounta- in states area. The prominent part that the Western School Supply Co. Inc. is playing in the business and civic life of Salt Lake City and vicinity mirrors the progressive- - R. C. "BOB" AFFLECK One of the more progressive business men of Salt Lake City and a man who deserves the re-spect and good will of a great many residents of the city, is ca-pable, friendly, R. C. "Bob" Af-fleck, manager of the Western Auto Supply Co., whose wide knowledge and long experience in the auto supply business has raised him to a position of prom-inence in his line. It is because of this that the Western Auto Supply Co., has earned a reputation for reliability second to none. Mr. Affleck is also civic mind- - CHARLES T. WHEELER To those progressive business men who have also taken a part in civic affairs we owe a debt of gratitude that we find difficult to pay. However we can do so in part by publicly acknowledging their many services and we take this opportunity to pay a brief tribute to Mr. Charles T. Wheeler of the Wheeler General Tire Co. In doing so we express the sen-timent and feelings of not only the oemmunity but also of those people who have been actively associated with him in business or civic affairs. Mr.. Wheeler's time is almost wholly occupied by his own af-fairs. Yet there has never been an occasion when he has been called upon by the people of Salt Lake City and the intermoun-tain area to assist some civic project, that he has not respond-ed and helped to the fullest ex-tent of his ability to further that project. Thus he has frequently sacrificed his personal interests to promote some worthy cause. Because of this Charles Wheel-er has proven himself to be a good citizen of whom his city and this district have every rea-son to feel just-ly proud. hes always been taken for grant-ed. Mr. Tanner's quiet assumption of responsibility, not only in con-nection with his own business but in regard to other matters as well, has very often lent a feel-ing of confidence to others in-terested in the same movements. In complimenting Win Tanner upon his leading position in the community we do no more than express the admiration and re-spect of his many friends and associates. o ness and ability of such men as he. He has also at all times been steadfast in his devotion to the city and the surrounding coun-try and on many occasions has lent his support to the success-ful promotion of meritorous civic projects. Salt Lake City and this dis-trict are fortunate to have such a man as Wilford Johnson in a position of responsibility and .service and this newspaper is merely reflecting public opinion in paying this brief tribute to one of the city's more progres-sive business men. ed and has always been ready to contribute his time and energy to any plan which promises to benefit the entire intermountain states area. And the people of Salt Lake City may regard with particular satisfaction the many services which he has performed for the community in the interest of progress and civic betterment. We urge our readers to look to Bob Affleck as a progressive business man of whom we may well be proud. His devotion to his city has been constant and his achievements well merited. We wish for him further success. O WAYNE L. THOMAS, ind G. FRED BUSH Sal! Lake City owes much to Jose progressive citizens who jv taken an active part in the fth and progress of the city 8? dVho have helped to make it ie (business center for this part te intermountain states area. Ucntioning some of these men ilonly fair to include Wayne Uomas and G. Fred Bush, the ntrs and managers of the 1 'aire Electric & Manufacturing v W. E. MYRICH Having a well earned reputa-tion for honesty, dependable judgment and a knowledge of the banking business far above the average, Mr. W. E. Myrlch, Vice Pres. of the Valley State Bank, also secretary of the Hi-La- Dairyman's Association, which is a cooperative owned and operated by a select group of dairymen located in the high mountain valleys of the Wasatch Mountains, merits a brief tribute in this Salt Lake City review. As a leading and progressive business man, Mr. Myrich nolds a high position in the esteem of the public generally. We desire to add our personal tribute and to make this public statement praising him for his many con-tributions to the welfare of Salt Lake City and the intermountain empire. It is not only as a practical ex-ecutive whose sound judgment and farsighted planning have brought such fine things to him-self, but it is because of his in-spiring optimism and loyal friendship that W. E. Myrich is held in such high regard by the people of this district. We glad-ly praise the record of this pro-gressive Salt Lake City business man. O JOHN C. and DURMONT HOLMBERG The progress of any commu-nity hinges to a great extent up-on the more progressive men in the world of business. This is as true in this locality as in any sector and local leaders are thus to be congratulated for their part in the general advancement of this section of the intermountain states area. Two of the more pro-gressive lumber men of Salt Lake City are Messers. John C. and Durmont Holmberg, the ex-ecutive heads of the Wood Pro-ducts Co., who are widely known and universally liked. Few men have such a thorough knowledge of every phase of the lumber game and to state that the Holmbergs know the business from A to Z is in no way an ov-erstatement. The honesty which has always characterized their every transaction has gained for them the respect and good will of the many men and firms with whom they do business. The successful career of John and Durmont Holmberg, illustra-tes the merits of integrity, bility grounded in experience and coupled with the added asset of a pleasing and sincere person-ality. We wish them many more years of continued success. O BARTLETT WICKS One of the more progressive leal estate men of Salt Lake City and one whose success can part-ly be attributed to a deep in-sight as to the direction in which the city will 'develop is Mr. Bartlett Wicks, Pres. of the E. B. Wicks Co. He has a sound basic knowledge of real estate values and has turned that knowledge to the advantage of the people with whom he does business. His aggressive methods, coupled with his sound and practical ideas, have made the services he rend-ers to the people more valuable and materially contributed to his well earned success. Mr. Wicks is also civic minded r.nd has always shown a cheerful willingness to contribute his share of time and energy to the promotion of community pro-jects. It is because of the activities of such progressive business peo-ple that Salt Lake City contin-ues, year after year, to show such a healthy growth and expansion both as a residential and indus-trial city. We are glad to pay tribute to Bartlett Wicks for the part he is playing in the onward progress of his ocity. dealers in new and rebuilt achinery for the ' mining and Jlir.g industry, and specialists the Electric Motor Rewind-- g field. CHARLES E. BARTLETT Salt Lake City has assumed its place of importance through-out the intermountain states area because of the efforts of g business and professional men who have developed the natural resources, or in some manner extended the trade ad-vantages, of the locality. One of the men who has taken an important part in many progres-sive movements is Mr. Charles E. Bartlett, Pres. of the Ute-Roc- k Mining Co. Mr. Bartlett has devoted a great deal of his time and energy to the growth and development of his city and this district and it is fitting at this time that we attempt to express in some small way our appreciation for his un-selfish contributions to the gen-eral welfare of the community. His many friends admire and respect in him those virtues that promote confidence and inspire good will. His upright business H. A. FRESNE In compiling this review of progressive Salt Lake City busi-ness people, we have endeavor-ed to select those citizens who, by the manner in which they have conducted themselves and their businesses, have caused the public to spot in them certain qualities over and above the av-erage. Such a man is Mr. H. A. Fresne, Pres. General manager of the Western Gas Appliances Inc. who is well known to many ot our readers because he has many friends throughout the in-termountain states area. Mr. Fresne's main interests have not been solely confined to his own business and private af-fairs, but have also included his contributions, in one form or an-other to those projects of a civic nature which come within the scope of his activities. He never neglects these obligations. H. A. Fresne is a man of wide L. T. McGUIRE In making this review of pro-gressive Salt Lake City business men it is appropriate that we in-clude some of those men who have taken an active part in the exploration and development of the natural resources of the in-termountain states area. In do-ing so we would be censored if we failed to include Mr. L. T. McGuire of the Western Machin-ery Co., dealers in mining ma-chinery. Mr. McGuire is that solid type of citizen whose fairness and friendliness and sincere desire to be of service are accountable for a large measure of his success. As time goes on his personal in-terests have become more close-ly interwoven with the business and civic affairs of the city. As a result he has, quite naturally, become accepted as a man who can be called upon and who will cheerfully do his part to further the development of those com-munity activities to which he is best fitted to lend assistance. L. T. McGuire has, by the con-duct of his business and his at-tention to civic affairs, earned the friendship and good will of his fellow citizens. He is to be complimented for his activities and we only express the desire of his many friends and associ-ates in wishing him continued success. O experience whose exploits m tne business and civic life of Salt Lake City and the intermountain empire merit more than passing attention and this writer is priv-ileged to pay this brief tribute to a man who well deserves more credit than is accorded him here. methods are but an outward re-flection of his inherent appreci-ation for fair practices. We con-gratulate Charles Bartlett on his success in both the business and civic life of his city and trust he will continue to progress in both fields of activity. O BEN D. PROCTER In any community you will always find a number of men and women who have shown more progressiveness than the average, and who also appreci-ate the fact that the greater the service they can render in their business means a greater return and more success to the individ-ual. These forthright principles have been applied by Mr. Ben D. Procter, director of the West-ern Neon School, with the suc-cess that is so well known to his friends and associates. Mr. Procter has proved very ably that he is an executive whose ability far exceeds the average, for it is largely due to his progressiveness, coupled with the determination that all of his students shall have a thorough training, that his school holds its high position in the public's fa-vor. It is a privilege to pay tribute to a business man like Ben Proc-ter and to point out to our read-ers that his is the guiding influ-ence back of the splendid train-ing received by a great many of the young people who are now holding responsible positions throughout the intermountain west. n CORNELL WIXOM There are many men In tnoir chosen fields who have gained recognition for the progressive manner in which they have con-ducted their business and accept-ed their civic responsibilities but vho will not permit much to be said of their achievements. It is however, public property every time a man reaches a position in any community where he is gen-erally recognized as a leader in his line. In reviewing a group of such citizens we must include Mr. Cornell Wixom, the owner and operator of Wixom's Piano Co., a man who has always done his work effectively even though it has been accomplished in an un-obtrusive manner. Mr. Wixom busy as he is, al-ways manages some how or oth-er to do his bit in any movement calculated to benefit the inter-mountain area as a whole. His modesty, however, will not per-mit him to say the things about himself which are said by his friends, who would also tell you that his professional conduct is a credit to his high sense of honor. We do not hesitate to recom-mend Cornell Wixom to our read-ers as a citizen who continues at all times to work to the advan-tage of the people of Salt Lake City. O LYLE WHITEHEAD It is because of the unfailing optimism and faith which he so consistently displays toward the future of Salt Lake City and the intermountain empire that we are prompted to call the partic-ular attention of our readers to the fine services which Mr. Lyle Whitehead of the Western Auto Transports Inc. performs in the successful conduct of his busi-ness. Mr. Whitehead is an aggressive and resourceful personality whose progressive policies have earned for him a widespread re-putation as a business man of more than average ability; and his apparent willingness to de-vote some of that ability to the promotion of civic activities fur-ther enhances his value to the city. The safety and efficiency of the operations of the Western Auto Transports, reflecting as it does the executive ability of this man, has earned for the com-pany a well deserved popularity among the people they serve. We are glad to give Lyle Whitehead the credit he so well deserves for his achievements and to wish for him a continued successful career as one of Salt Lake City's more progressive business men. O J A. WILLIAMS "I Mr. A. Williams, a well known Miaing and heating contractor of the firm of A. ERWIN J. CALTON It is appropriate that we in-clude in this review of progres-sive Salt Lake City business men Mr. Erwin J. Calton, manager of the Western Sign Co. He not on-ly has the reputation of being progressive but also the added one of being a willing supporter of many community affairs. Aside from his business activi-ties Mr. Calton has always shown an interest in the civic better-ment and progress of his city and has backed up his interest by his contributions to many projects which have benefited the city and the intermountain states area. He is a good and loyal citizen and the full measure of his loyalty is most apparent because of his willingness to aid community ac-tivities. His help along these lines has made of Erwin Calton a fine ex-ample of the type of man we all appreciate. We congratulate and extend to him, on behalf of all citizens interested in better busi-ness and civic progress, sincere appreciation for his contributions to the general welfare of Salt Lake City andovicinity. RULON D. HORSLEY Recognized as one of the more business men of Salt Erogressive Mr. Rulon D. Horslcy. the executive head of the Utah Wholesale Hardware Co. and tne Western Trading Co., performs a real service for the people of his city and the intermountain area, and his many contributions to civic betterment are too well known to require repetition in these columns. His personal suc-cess has been turned to the ad-vantage of his fellow citizens and he is always ready to assist any enterprise which promises to ad-vance the welfare of the com-munity. . -- Mr. Horsley is deserving praise and this small tribute is but a just recognition for tne many services which he has per-formed in the way of both busi-ness and civic activities. His re-putation for the successful con-duct of his business affairs is no greater than his reputation for the honest practices which char-acterize his every transaction. We congratulate Rulon on his splendid record, and IrSst that he shall continue to serve the people of Salt Laice City and vicinitoy. OWEN W. FRAME To be a consistent and persist-ent booster of the home commu-nity often takes courage and plenty of optimism. It is because of his unfailing faith in the fu-ture of Salt Lake City and the intermountain empire, and his unflagging efforts to promote its development, that Mr. Owen W. Frame, owner and operator of the White Spot Lunch, located at 3325 S 9 E. is selected now for this brief tribute. He has proved very ably tha he is a restaurant operator of un-usual ability, for it is largely due to his ideals of service coupled with the determination to serve only the very best, that the White Spot Lunch holds its high position in the public's favor. He is a man of sound business judg-ment whose ideas have been the inspiration of many who know him. His personality and energy in directing the operations of his restaurant are important factors in his outstanding success. We are glad to pay tribute to Owen Frame and to point out to our readers that his is the guiding influence behind the splendid service and delicious foods to be found at the White Spot Lunch. O MAX CARPENTER Few men in the hotel business today have earned the honor and respect of their and fellow citizens as has Mr. Max Carpenter the comparatively new manager of the Hotel Utah in Salt Lake City which is well known to the traveling public throughout the intermountain west, for its fine service and fine appointments. Much of the credit for the re-putation of this hotel is due Mr. Carpenter, whose untiring ef-forts, ss and care-ful attention to detail have made his services invaluable to the hotel. Max Carpenter, although man-ager of the hotel a comparatively short time, has been in the hotel business over a period of years and has literally learned the business from the ground up. His ideals of service to patrons is thoroughly exemplified in the manner every employee of the hotel attends to his duties. Noth-ing is taken for granted, nothing is forgotten; hospitality and ser-vice is always their first and last consideration. When you have occasion to vis-it the Hotel Utah, you will ap-preciate what a tremendous po-sition of trust and responsibility Mr. Carpenter holds. It is with pleasure that we extend our ap-preciation and congratulations to him and the owners of the Hotel Utah and we take this opportu-nity of wishing them continued success. WES WONNACOTT Mr. Wes Wonnacott, has pro-ved his progressiveness by con-stantly adding to and increasing the service which the Wes Wonnacott Associated Service Station, located at 386 S 2 E has rendered to the public. The large volume of business handled by his service station proves that "service" to him is not just a "word" but something to be ren-dered to the people to the fullest extent of his ability. In addition to his close atten-tion to his business affairs, Mr. Wonnacott was never a man to dodge his civic responsibilities and his help in those matters has always been cheerfully given. He fully appreciates the value of good will and has more than his share of that intangible com-modity because of the manner in which he meets both business and civic obligations. He is a credit to the community and is thoroughly established in the forefront of the business and civic life of the city. Wes Wonnacott has many friends in and around the city and it is a pleasure to bring him before our readers in this review of progressive Salt Lake City, business men. EVERETT II. WILLIAMS In singling out some of the more progressive business men of Salt Lake City, we would be censored should we fail to in-clude Mr. Everett H. Williams, owner and operator of the E. H. Williams Heating Service. He is a man who has never spared himself in his participation in both the business and civic ac-tivities of his city. Mr. Williams has always been conscious of his civic responsi-bilities and ready and willing to meet in every detail those oppor-tunities which come to his at-tention to further civic enter-prise. He may well be proud of his achievements along these lines. Everett Williams also deserves a great deal of credit for the honest and successful manner in which he has conducted his busi-ness affairs. He is a friendly, lik-able personality whose sincere desire to be of service has gain-ed for him a host of friends and acquaintances in and around Salt Lake City, who would if piven the opportunity, join us in wish-ing iiim many more years of con-tinued success. MARION WILLEY Mr. Marion Willey, owner and operator of the Marion Willev & used car lot, is one of those used car dealers of Salt Laite Citv'who has consistently forg-ed ahead in business. He has a -- co put his shoulder to the wheels rf civic progress whenever help k needed in furthering enter-nrise- s promoted for the general welfare of the intermountain em- - plMr. Willey was never a man given to wishful thinking. His methods are those of direct ac-tion and whether the problem at hand is one concerning, his own business or that of a civic nature, he attacks it with optimism and enthusiasm. Add to a vigorous this his acknowledged business ability and his keen sense of val-ues and it is easily understood why he is almost invariably suc-cessful in business or other mat-ters. EDWARD M.
