C W. W Barron Barron- publisher of the Boston News Bureau showing the need of increased oil production for the tile use of the United States and its allies in the conduct of the war and showing I the necessity for til the protection of American oil interests in Mexico jeopardized by German propaganda Another interesting portion I lof of Mr Barrons Barron's article follows Today the tIme country Is aroused as never before over the necessity for merchant ships aeroplanes submarines and submarine submarine submarino sub sub- marine marino destroyers destroyers' Nobody arises either In Washington or In the public press to tell the people of the United States that all destroyers st these s sor programs and or aeroplanes Pl ships s re rest submarines b upon An oil i I fuel and that the United States is not I producing and cannot within Its own borders produce the oil to sustain this I program without another expensive shutdown shutdown shut shut- down in industry The press of the United States has been misled and silenced concerning Mexico In Mexico alone is the oil base that can immediately support our great war pro pro- pro gram ram The oil fields of Mexico are threatened threatened threatened threat threat- ened by German propaganda and contendIng contending contend contend- ing military forces of ot which the people of the United States are permitted to know nothing Both Carranza and Washington Washington Washington Wash Wash- ington ha have embargoed news out of Mexico Two years ears ago the United States had barrels of oil in storage This was reduced last year and the reduction continues At the present rate of consumption consumption consumption con con- I without outside relief our storage storage storage stor stor- age supplies will be exhausted next year when our new ships launch the United States as again a world power on the ocean The great oil field of the United States is that of Kansas Oklahoma and Texas with wells producing about barrels of oil per day but here we find the startling decrease of barrels per day in production since last October Our next largest field is that of California California Cali Call fornia whose wells yielding more morEr than three times per well the Oklahoma output give Ive us nearly barrels a year year year-a a decrease of Wyoming Wyoming Wyo Wyo- ming Is a new field with only wells averaging Ing somewhat over 40 barrels barrel per I i 1 day There is no reason to expect there there- from any relief production The old Appalachian Appalachian Appalachian Ap Ap- Ap- Ap region with its wells yields yields' only barrels per day All the oil wells in the tho United States are now producing at the rate of only barrels per annum and we weI shall shortly require barrels I per annum to sail our ships submarines I and destroyers and produce the very high grade oil necessary In our aeroplane program Great Britain Is using tonnage needed In the war zone on long routes to bring oil from Java Consumption In California has been somewhat relieved by transfer of the South American demand to the Mexican oil fields because the distance for ships Is fo so 0 much shorter through the Pa Panama ama canal from South American ports to Tampico as compared with California ports Our coal famine with all its disasters in life and property was due to a shortage shortage shortage short short- age age- of f less safeguarded We produced tons of coal last year an increase of and of a hundred million over a a. few years before But we were still short of re requirements re by tons or less than 10 per cent and coal is In unlimited supply supply supply sup sup- ply In the United States It can be safely mined and safely transported and supply Is only a question of price and men But Mexico presents a very complicated situation It Is the greatest oil field in inthe inthe the world is close to our doors and has oil to 1 burn rn and waste I All the oil fields over which Russian and Turk Germans and English are now contending im h in European Asia cannot compare compare compare com com- pare in present or potential output with the oil fields on the Gulf of Mexico extending extending ex ex- tending north and ad south miles along the the coast coast and fifty or sixty miles inland A single oil well here San Juan Casiano of the Mexican Petroleum company has produced since 1910 barrels and Its ts pressure is undiminished Its flow of oil cannot be restrained below barrels a day Without endangering the surrounding country cOUl When further harnessed harnessed har bar in begins to quake In rebellion The Caslano Casiano well is surpassed by Cerro Azul a few miles s farther south brought in two years ago The company owning these wells and many others is permitted production of only barrels of oil per day because the he warring governments have comman comman- commandeered its steamers built and building This concern produced barrels last year r The Germans knew before the war the potential production of this field Their is so strong at that the he Washington government has blacklisted blacklist blacklist- ed and forbidden trade from this country with the German firms at Tampico Es- Es eore e- e ore fore the war Germany was negotiating for or a small section of this field for which it t would pay many millions The destruction destruction destruction tion of this field are oil fields from the Arctic circle cir clr- cir cir- I cle cia to South America and throughout Asia and the eastern Islands but there I is no field so valuable for the worlds world's I commerce and defense as the Mexican oil field It Is the time gem of Mexico's great wealth It was pioneered and developed by American America companies and American capital under charters charter from the Mexican
