Show AS TO STREET CAR FARES. - The city of Clevelarj is a groat city, a very rich city, too. but the Cleveland Electric company has reported re-ported to the City Council that the operation of cars Bt the 3-cent fare, in accordance with the avowed policy of the city administration, is a losing proposi-. proposi-. lion. The report says the cost of carrying passengers . Is in excess of 3 cents and that the expense will not jvarrant a continuance of the test. Wc do not know how the city of Cleveland generates gen-erates its power for electric cars, but it is probably by steam, but in that city coal is not half as expensive expen-sive as it is here and oil is so cheap that-oue would think power ought to be generated by burning oil at u less expense than to keep'up the water power in this city. If passengers cannot be carried at a profit at 3 cents in Cleveland where there are so many people, peo-ple, !he profits in Salt .Lake City at 4 and 5-cent fares must be very doubtful. And if the company expends, as it has promised to. $5,000,000 this year, to perfect the tracks and to provide modern new pars, there will have to'be an increase in the people here to keep the company;even.
