Washington's Washing-ton's mysterious "veiled lady," who has been annoying' Mrs. 'Walter B. Fairfield, wife of a geological survey employee, has been unveiled, according to a story in private circulation today. to-day. It is said that the "veiled lady" is the wife of a local physician and that she. maddened by jealousy of the beautiful Mrs. Fairfield, has sallied forth evening after evening to spy upon the visitors and happenings of the Fairfield household. Npt in many a day has Washington had such a tidbit of gossip, and the following alleged story of the affair is being repeated over the teacups and behind the fans of Washington society, i It seems, it is said, that the doctor in question bad been paying attention to Mrs. Fairfield, and so deeply was his heart touched that he sent his wife to Europe so he might have a free field. Scenting his motives, it is said, she returned, unexpectedly from Europe and charged him with what might be called transfer of affections from his loyal wife. Not satisfied with his protestations protesta-tions of innocence, she immediately began be-gan investigations on her own behalf, shadowing in a disguised appearance the Fairfield borne. . ' - A policeman, detailed to guard the residence, soon noticed her nocturnal visits, watched her and asked her what she meant. It is claimed that the po- liceman allowed her to continue her watch for her alleged errant hnsband. 'Do you know Jdrs. Pairfieldl" ahe was asked. 'I know of her," shortly replied the lady. "But do you know her personally t" was repeated. When told it was said she was the "veiled lady," she continued: "I have no connection with this ease. I know nothing about it."
