Show KANSAS. On the eve of his leaving for Europe Governor Gov-ernor Stubbs of Kansas in the course of an interview in-terview said: "Kansas has been going its own way, mind-ign mind-ign its own business, and its people arc contented and happy. Very little interest in politics is taken anywhere in the state." And that from a Kansas governor. Think of him a year ago, when he was working directly for the colonel and indirectly for the Democratic party! He says now Kansas is "minding its own business," but in doing that has it ceased to mind the business of everybody else? The people of course just now are looking out for the harvest. But that over, will they not resume re-sume the work of directing how the country should be run? Kansas should diversify her crops. That would improve her lands, would keep her people more at home; they would have to work harder, perhaps, but they would not work the people outside so much. The stormy petrel exults when a storm comes on. Above the roar of the hurricane and of the angered ocean its cry can be heard adding to the chaos and the clamor. There are stormy petrels among men as among birds, and more than a fair proportion of these have always built eyries in the sunflower state. Kansas has always been what the fly blister was in the old day allopathic practice always a counter irritant. The soul of old Osa-watomie Osa-watomie Brown seems to have an abiding place in that state, and not only is it still marching on, but it seems to be an exciting cause in the hearts of that impatient people. And when Governor Stubbs talks softly then look out for the something he has up his sleeve! |
