Show MOVING A CANVAS TOWN. Inverell is a flour. shing town in the northern part of New South Wales. It has only quite recently been connected by rail with Sydney, which ia aome 500 miles distant; previoualy, Glen lanes, forty-two milea away on the main Northern Trunk line, was the nean-it railway point. It ia now, however, the terminal of the Northwestern line, which .junctions on to tie Northern line at Werria Creek, aome (40 miles from the metropolis. An interesting incident occurred while the l-ne r. under construction; one part of the line had been completed, and it was neees aary for the local camp of navvies, platelayers, etc., to be carried fartier oa to the next aection. The canvas home of the workers aad their families were accordingly shifted bodily on to the railway trucks, and the contractor engine took them aome tea milea away to the acene of their new labors. This queer removal serves to show the practical prac-tical method of the Australians. From the Wide World magazine. |
