Show mushrooms bloom hprow Hupfel's Sons Will Produce 200,000 Pounds NEW YORK. Feb. 4.-dolph O. Hupfel Jr., president of the New York brewer' board of trade, returned to New York altar a session with th way and mean committee of the house in Washington, hopeful that new tariff legislation would embody protection for a struggling Infant Industry In-dustry fostered by prohibition. Mr. Hupfel Is president of A. Hupfel's Sons, who once hsd ablg brewery at One Hundred Sixty-first street and Third avenue. In the Bronx. This year the great plant, atrlpped of the last suspicion of the teasing fragrance of hops and the bracing tang of alcohol, is expected to produce 200,000 pounds of cultivated mushrooms. It Is because this country produces but 400.000 pounds a year of its annual an-nual consumption of , 000. 000 pounds that Mr. Hupfel asked for a duty of 10 cents a pound on the Imported canned article, whether whole or dried. He said he found both Republican and Democratic lawmakers keenly sympathetic sympa-thetic with his attempt to turn his plsnt Into a new and uaeful line of production, and believed from their attitude at-titude they would grant the Industry needed protection. The ex-brewer explained ex-plained that the chief sources of supply sup-ply of the Imported article were Italy, France and China, and that in each of those countries the lowest grade of labor was employed in th industry. Taking; advantage of the existing heating, refrigerating and ventilating apparatus in the brewery, Mr. Hupfel decided upon the experiment In mushroom mush-room growing more than a year ago. The buildings were fitted with layer after layer of movable trays packed from floor to celling and in these the mushrooms are grown at a suitable and practically constant temperature. The refrigerating apparatus makes It possible pos-sible to preserv the very perishable product at time when production 1 in excess of Immediate demand. Mr. Hupfel said the Frank Fehr Brewing company of Louisville, one of the largest in the South, has followed fol-lowed th example of hia firm In turning turn-ing It plant Into a mushroom "factory" "fac-tory" and that Mr. Fehr waa backing his efforts for protection. Many other brewers, he said, were watching keenly th outcome of the experiment. |
