Show . . . 9. Speeding Up Justice j ; . N THE midst of the crimes committed in vari- ; ous parts of the United States in the last few I months are signs of awakening justice. less than a week after their, arrest, Floyd and Arthur Carr, abductors of a wealthy Los Angeles matron, ! are confined in the California state prison with ' indications that they will spend the rest of their ; lives there. Little pampering of the criminal was shown in this case. There would be fewer crimes if this sort of justice were more general throughout ! the country. The kidnapers were not coddled by the Los Angeles public once they were in the toils of the law. No tears were wasted on this pair by maudlin sympathizers and the course of the law was clear and unobstructed. The court proceedings were not delayed while skilled attorneys fought over technicalities. Sentence Sen-tence was swift when the guilt of the Carrs was firmly established. The presiding' judge did not mince matters, did not confuse their deeds with the lives of their innocent and lawabiding relatives. rela-tives. Instead he imposed a sentence somewhat in keeping with the offense, sending them to prison for from ten years to life. He added that, as the sentencing judge, he would never recommend a termination of the sentence. There are few to mourn the plight of the Carrs and no lawabiding citizens to protest that the sentence is too severe. Extortion, throueh the abduction of loved ones and threats, of violence, vio-lence, is one of the most despicable crimes with which society has to deal. . Men who resort to this scheme of gain or revtnge can hold no respect even in the under; strata of crime. They are without courage. or other' virtues to reclaim their sordid souls from the everlasting contempt of criminals who recognize a risk and take thtf chance Hence there can-be no dissenting voice in the sentence whfch tasrbierr unposei'on the Carr brothers. The speed and the determination displayed by the Los Angeles authorities are to be commended to the police and prosecuting -of fi cials of other sections .. . |
