That was the record that Salt Lak county mad In Its 1939 traffic traf-fic safety program. Figures on accidents and Injuries In-juries for the 'full year are not ,s K available, but 11-month statls-i statls-i tics showed clearly the advances made last year by the county. To December 1, 1939, there were 373 traffic accidents reported In the county, compared with 352 for s all of 1938. December accidents wer not expected to be more than 4a To December 1 there were 180 persona Injured, more than 100 less than the 283 Injured in all cf 1938. Deaths Are It Deaths In the county for the full rear wer 22, compared with 50 In 938. far upward 553 for the first 11 1 months of 1939, compared with 378 for all of 1938. Arrests for speeding speed-ing alone in the first 11 months totaled 158, compared with 96 for the full year 1938. The upturn In arrests Indicated more diligent enforcement, since the sheriff's office traffic division had only a small Increase in personnel. per-sonnel. The personnel was increased in-creased by one man for the last six months of the year. Yr Members Lkted Members of the squad are J. E. Schelb, chief traffic deputy sheriff; sher-iff; D. Mr. Schelb reported that an outstanding out-standing phase of his department's 1939 work was a program of close cooperation with the state road commission ana highway patrol In engineering and enforcement "Because the road commission has made Its traffic engineering department available to us, there has been considerable engineering investigation following accidents, I to determine what engineering is needed to prevent recurrences of mishaps," Mr. Schelb said. "For Instance, after one fatal accident such an engineering atudy waa made, resulting In. placing plac-ing reflector buttons on a dangerous danger-ous curve at which the accident occurred." Work In Schools Education work was carried on constantly, Mr. Schelb said, by means of traffic safety talks at schools and civic clubs and th junior traffic police, numbering w boy who r In charge of Mr. Thomander. At present Mr. Schelb said, an Intensive traffic education program pro-gram is being outlined in Granite school district Mr. Schelb favors building more T sidewalks In the county as a traf fic safety aid. Such a recommen-, recommen-, datlon also was a major proposal 1 of Rufus G. Jasper, National Safe- fty council traffic engineer, who made a county survey last April. |
